(De/Re)constructing Genre // A2 Script & Reflection

Coming into this task, I’d never actually written a script before. Crazy, right!? Somehow I’ve made it through 3 years of a Media degree without writing a single script. So because of that, approaching this task was both daunting *and* exciting.

The prompt to write a ‘boring’ narrative seemed to ease some of the stress around writing a ‘perfect’ script, as I no longer had to worry about writing a stellar debut. Even though I was required to be intentionally boring, I figured that a good script in this situation ought to be both boring and versatile. Following our in class discussions of the noir genre, I figured that I’d try to write a scene between two detectives sitting at a dimly lit underground bar in New York (surely it doesn’t get much more typical ‘noir’ than that?). I decided any backstory outside of this conversation should be left unknown, and I don’t believe I even mentioned the two were detectives. I thought this might add versatility to the story, so that each person could interpret it in a broad range of ways, although I’m not actually sure whether or not this helped.

Film Noir Detective At The Bar : noir

One thing I found funny is how much I struggled to think of good names for my characters. At the time I wrote the script, I was in a group call with a some of my high school friends, so I just picked the first two of them on the list and used their names. I’m sure if anyone were to use my script the names would be completely irrelevant and would probably go unmentioned.

I’d be interested to create this script, just to see how much of the noir style I could bring into it, but that would be outside of the scope of this assignment, and a task for another time. Maybe one day I’ll make a cool noir film.
