Surrealist Cinema

  • Surrealist Cinema prefers to use shocking, irrational, or absurd imagery and Freudian dream symbolism to challenge the traditional function of art to represent reality. (cineCollage, 2018)
  • The main ideology of the Surrealist Cinema is breaking the traditional expectations of the audience by put unrelated images together to surprise them. Instead of the normal acknowledge of aesthetic, the image it presents is more like a convulsive beauty.
  • Normally, the story of the Surrealist Cinema is an uncomfortable and sexy story rather than a combination of many humor or mass events.
  • It usually shows the deepest desire of human.

  • Andre Breton, “Surrealism [was] based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of association, heretofore neglected, in the omnipotence of dreams, in the undirected play of thought.” (cineCollage, 2018)
  • The Surrealist Cinema tries to explore the subconsciousness of human without any control, even aesthetic and ethical rules. As a result, the shots usually are strange or meaningful images without reasonable form or style. It challenges the casual relationship.
  • In normal, these films inspire the dream or fantasy of the character. There is no psychological present of characters in the film.
  • Sexuality, Sexual desire and ecstasy, violence, blasphemy, and bizarre humor are all significant elements in Surrealist Cinemas.

Italian Neorealism

  • The Italian Neorealism focus on the stories of poor class and working class to show the difficult economic environment and the mental situation at that time. It reflects the poor and hopelessness situation by showing the change of Italian daily life.
  • It always chooses unprofessional actors.

Characteristics:

  • Italian Neorealism avoids telling the story orderly. Normally, the structure is episodic and events evolve organically.
  • The style is more like the documentary visual form.
  • It prefers to use real locations and nonprofessional actors.
  • Use more speech rather than dialogue.
  • Italian Neorealism films don’t use techniques for editing. They like the style of no style.
