Camera: Sony A7M3

The lens used in the Vlog: Sony 16-35 F2.8 Full Frame

Positive

  • The battery is much bigger now. Thus, it can last for a longer time. Same size as Canon battery. 1 battery can stay for 1 day Vlog shooting.
  • The LCD screen is much better on the Sony A7M3. The filmmaker can watch the shooting process.
  • The colors work well with the Sony A7M3.
  • It can hold up the 120p slow motion. (120 frames per second)
  • It can be switch between slow motion and normal quickly.
  • The dynamic range works super well. Everything is just evenly exposed. (13 or 14) Dynamic range: the contrast between the light part and the dark part.
  • The style of the camera looks more cinematic.
  • Sony wins the low light department. However, the A7S2 works better in the low light situation.
  • The ‘super 35’ mode.
  • It’s 4K and full frame.

Negative

  • There is not a flip LCD.
  • It causes more time on post-production with Sony A7M3, comparing with Canon. Canon is more like right out of the camera but Sony needs to do more editing.
  • It takes more time to export as a 1080s video.
  • The auto-focus isn’t good as Canon. Once you move forward and back a little bit. The auto-focus will change. The face detection can make this better. It gonna be worse if there is anything on the lens. It doesn’t work when people change to use the Canon lens.
  • It has the high base ISO.
  • The stabilization isn’t as good as GH5.
  • It can not shoot in the water.
  • The microphone is easy to break.

  • Sony 16-35mm f/4
    • Vlogging, Landscape Photos, and some B-Roll. f/4 is not enough for night shooting. It doesn’t have the great depth filed.

  • Sony 55mm f/1.8 Full Frame Prime Lens:

  • Portrait photos and Low light situation
  • One of the sharpest prime lenses Sony has ever put out
  • It is closest to what a human looks like in the reality
  • Having the f/1.8 allow the photographer to get the nice background blur and bokeh in shots
  • Sigma 16mm f/1.4 Apsc Prime Lens
(Figure 3: the image of the lens, Sigma 16mm f/1.4, source by Google)

  • Vlogging, B-roll, and low light situation
  • a wide focal length as well as a wide aperture at an affordable price
  • APS-C crop frame lens: it is good at shooting videos but not photos. It isn’t the full frame on the sensor body, it is about 24mm equivalent.

  • Sony 18-105mm f/4
(Figure 4: the screenshot of the lens on Sony official website, Sony 18-105mm f/4, source by Zhen)

  • It is the versatile lens. Nice wide angle look at 18 mm, zoom all the way into 80-105, we can get the nice shallow depth of filed and the great cinematic look.
  • It doesn’t extend or retract when users zoom in or zoom out. In other words, it always stays the same length.
