Movement & Lighting

  • The basic idea of this video is trying some camera movements and filming some moving stuff to see if there are some great movement can surprise me.
  • The first shot is just setting the camera and film the person who is skateboarding. Then I tried a different way to show the activity, tack the moving person. Compare this two shot, the tracking shot is more clear to show who is the main object.
  • Then I try the one only show a part of the face first then zoom out to show the whole face, body, and the environment. From my perspective, filming in this way can make audiences more curious, especially with some sounds.
  • Next, it is a super touchable and surprising shot. The man was feeding pigeons. Then those pigeons fly to different directions. Thus, I can shoot the shot.
  • Then, I try the running scene with my friend. I was thinking if I should show the shaking camera. I was considering if it will influence the impressions of audiences. However, I still choose to film by naturally shaking the camera because it is more real and may make the audience have more sensation.
  • In addition, I try the PEDESTAL way to film. In other words, shooting the object by moving the camera vertically up or down. It is may easier for audiences to notice the details instead of just showing the object. Besides, I have also tried the Panning way of filming. However, it didn’t work well. Thus, I didn’t upload it. The benefit of it is to show the environment before showing the object.
  • The last one is also tracking the moving object.
  • In conclusion, various camera movement is for different purposes. It base on the requirement of the story. For example, It depends on if the story is supposed to show the environment, details or just show the object directly.

  • I did the lighting one in a pretty simple way. I just film various places at the different time of the day. Then to see the different views of the environment from different lights.
  • For the first shot, I was trying to film the sunset. However, the sunset was covered by the buildings. Thus, I can not see it. Lucky, I found a good view for the Ferris wheel. Because it is lucifugous, the near side is dark and the far side is light. Thus, if we need to shoot an object with the multiway light, the object may look dark. We can use the reflector if we need more light on the object.
  • The second shot is when the sunlight is directly on the building from the front side. Thus, the building is completely bright. Because of its hard light, there is also clear and sharp shadow behind the building. If we want soft light, we can use things like the softbox.
  • The others are in the same situation.
  • Compare with these shots, the direction of the light is also a significant part of the filming. To understand well, I also searched online.
  • Front-lit, three-quarters front-lit, side light, three-quarters backlight, and backlight are the main ways of film lighting. The direction of light not only decide the shadow but also decide the foundation of emotion. If the light is side light and backlight, the frame will look darker. It is more suitable for drama and mystery. Besides, the object will look like underexposure. If the object is the only dark part, it is also a good way to get audiences to focus on him.
  • In addition, the color of the light is also can influence the emotion of the frame. For example, the color is closer to blue when the weather is cloudy or raining. The atmosphere of the shot looks sorrowful and depressive.
