A3: Production

This time, we work in a bigger group with various roles. Thus, it is significant to coordinate everyone’s job and make sure every part is going to work well. However, there is something just happened unexpectedly and you never know. Just like Scannell (2003, p. 105) argued, ‘any live situation is inherently fragile’. As I heard, there is a technical problem with the graphic. Besides, because of the color of the screen, we adjust the light level several times. Thus, we wait such a long time to do the real shoot. Hopefully, it goes well. There are two interesting points in the process. On the one hand, the control of the time is important for the Live show. The writer has prepared a large number of questions to make sure we can achieve the specific time. After that time, the floor manager told talents to ignore the rest of questions and do the ending. Thus, the time is under control. On the other hand, the dispose of the script is special. Before the rehearsal, talents would be told the rough process of the Live show. However, they won’t know the exact questions. The live show still leave a space to let things happen freely but it needs to under-control. Thus, it shows that the Live program is a high-control process with sufficient preparation. (Lundell 2009, p. 286) Additionally, there is something just happened accidentally. When we do the rehearsal, the host tore the mail because he thought it was the real Live show. Other talents were supposed to choose one from two emails. To solve this problem, they were told to just pick the other one. Thus, the Live show actually is not fully real. (Lundell 2009, p. 273)

As camera operators, there are few roles related to our roles. The director is absolutely one of them. We get orders directly from him. The producer will tell us the rough script we will film. Thus, we can have the rough idea of what will going on here. For our own groups, we discussed the division of labor to decide who operates which camera. Actually, I think we are supposed to relate to floor manager also but we do not have communication this time. By the way, I am confused that we only can hear the voice of directors. How can we get information from the floor managers? After putting on the earphone, I can hear nothing from the people near me.

Rather than an audio operator, this time I choose to be a camera operator. Because of my passion for shooting and filming, I want to learn the skills of shooting by multi-cameras. To start with, the set of the camera is different. For the single camera, it needs to be removed from the tripod and reset on sometimes. Besides, we need to adjust the height of the tripod for different shots. For multi-camera, it almost won’t be removed from the tripod. Moreover, we only need to adjust the height of tripod at the start. Secondly, the process of adjusting frame is more convenient. I am not sure about if the hand shank is only for multi-camera. I believe some people may also use it but I never use before. I can zoom in, zoom out and even change the speeds. It just makes the work so easy. Thirdly, multi-camera may more focus on the preparation. For example, I used to film a scene by the single camera. I have to adjust the frame, position and white balance all the time. For some special shot, I need to follow the actor and zoom in. In conclusion, shooting with the single-camera especially film is more focusing on the camera language. It is a significant part to tell the story. Instead of this, multi-camera is more simple and fast to do a shooting. For the multi-camera show, it more focuses on the collaboration between various roles. Camera operators actually do not have the control of the expression of the content. For instance, we got the orders straightly from the director then adjust the frame right. Additionally, different cameras have the different division of labor. The living camera is supposed to change frame by following the order from the director. Others just keep on the same frame.
