The great Gatsby is a impressive movie. There is a scene of dinner time attracting me a lot. I will analyse this scene in several aspects, such as use of camera and method of expressing the story and showing frames.

To start with, I will analyse this scene from the use of camera, such as shot construction, camera stand and camera movement. At the start of this scene, the speed is fast. Shots of each character change fast with they are talking. It also has the shot from upward side between the change of characters. It make changes more fluent. In order to show the fast speed, it also use the effect called gradual change in editing. Camera usually doesn’t move with characters in this scene. I think the reason is that the story and dialogue are the most significant things in this movie. Strongly changes of shots may divert attention from audience. It use the change of shot to connect two frames. For example, Tom sit at first. When he was trying to stand up, it change to Lucy’s shot. When it change back to Tom’s shot, he has already stood up. Thus, there is no camera moving in this action. After those boring and familiar talk, speed of shots change gets slow. Medium shot is used frequently because there are lots of dialogue with four characters. A wide shot at the beginning to show the environment of dinner and another one is in order to show their shocked reaction at the same time. There are some close-up of main characters to show specific expressions and details. Angles of shots in this scene is nothing special instead of the movie called I kill I mom. For me, I like various shots have connection. It will easier for audience to accept the change from one shot to another. This scene also has the connection in different shots, such as candelabrums and attendants.

Secondly, I will analyse this scene from the method of expressing the story and showing frames, such as use of colour, light and sound. In this movie, the colour is warm. It gives audience a retro feeling. In this scene, It use a lot of sidelights. There are clearly light part and dark part in a frame. the colour is bright even in the night. It can show the grand environment of upper class. It shows strong difference by comparing with dark colour of working class. It also different from the light and colour at the end. The colour and light used in shot can show the development of story and show the idea and feeling directly. There is also has some special colour for main character. In the great Gatsby, Green is the special colour of Gatsby. It present American dream of Gatsby.
