Last week I watched the movie called ‘I killed my mother’, I really like the colour it used and the angle it chose. Here are some of my own understanding and feelings.

Firstly, setting an interview of the main character at the start can let the audiences get into the story directly and immediately. However, it’s better not to let characters look at the camera, It will make audience feel he is talking to them. Audiences are watching a story of others. Thus, there are not supposed to be communication between them.

Secondly, set connections between shots can make the film more coherent. On the one hand, if the shot is colourful, we can do a close-up of several things. After that we can do a wide shot. Then these shots are connected. On the other hand, it’s better to use close-up if you want to show some details. The effect is even better if you switch two connectional shots. If it’s a shot with action, slow-motion is better. The comparison between active frame and freeze frame can show the idea strongly. Additionally, same shape with different colour or same colour with different shapes can make a connection between different shots. These common things also make these shots connected. Finally, if there are same place or situation in a movie, it’s better to keep a same angle to shot.

Thirdly, part of the shot can be dark. Only focusing on the main things or main characters to show to audiences.

Next, when we want to show quicker-steps or something with surprise, it’s a good idea to only shot steps with close-up. Furthermore, It’s not a problem if the camera is shaking when people film a shot to a walking character. This shaking shot can show the footsteps more accountable. People can express the emotion by controlling the speed and level of shaking. By the way, colour and light levels can show emotion and atmosphere of a story. As a result, use them well and have a good control of light and dark.

Finally, some of these shots is related to cooking. It’s more clearly to only show the result of every steps instead of showing hands in these shots.

To sum up, I am strongly attracted by this movie. I like the way it told the story. I like the colour it used. I also like the control of light and dark. I like the way it changed shots and scenes. In my opinion, it will be a good model for me to shot in the future.

I also read a article is concerned to artistic usage of lens.

It introduces Leading line, which is the nature movement of camera in filmmaking. There are various types of leading line, such as horizontal lines, diagonal lines and vertical lines.

It also mentioned the rack focusing in its content. By adjusting the focus, zooming in, zooming out and dimming to show the main thing of this shot and this scene. Audiences can get the idea of story more easily and clearly.

The next part is about natural frame. Natural Frame can be freeze or active. It can stand out the main character.

The last thing is related to balance of shot. A balance shot can make audience feel more comfortable.

In conclusion, this article sets up a probable structure of artistic usage of lens for me. I think I will concern these points when I film a scene or a shot.
