Today was presentation day, where everyone proposed the idea or concept they’d like to explore for the rest of the semester in Film 3. It was really inspiring to hear everyone’s ideas, as they were all so unique and interesting. There was a mix of documentary or drama, conventional or experimental, and technical or character driven – which gave me lots of elements to think about and perhaps reflect on in regards to my own projects.
Although some of these are very different from mine, I particularly enjoyed:
- Jamie’s photos experimenting with lighting, and possibly creating a scene to do with a crime. I thought the test photos she took were cinematographically amazing, and am excited to see what technical products she creates.
- Kiralee’s idea to explore character and techniques such as the ‘close up montage’ by Edgar Wright. It’s such a cool and unique way of filmmaking and I think it will be really interesting to try and recreate it in an individual project, to see what combination of shots does and doesn’t work.
- Aidan’s exploration of night landscapes, and capture the quietness and perhaps strangeness of a place in the early hours of the morning. He spoke about using soundscapes and cinematography to help translate this, and this was very similar to my idea of wanting to capture the atmosphere of a place at different times, so his presentation sparked some ideas for my project as well.
I’m not sure about what types of collaborative groups we would form with all these different ideas, but I am intrigued by what everyone else will produce by the end and will be happy to help out with anyone’s project at this point.
For my own pitch, here is some of the feedback I received from Paul, Dan and Robin:
- Get an actor to work with you at three different times of the day
- Different tests at different locations
- The scene from Girls, they would have spent a lot of time designing the shot around the location
- Investigate the location first and then sort out when you do all the shooting
- Maybe repeat the same shots in the three different times and let the natural change in atmosphere do the talking
- Use actors or purely documentary shots
I think some of these points are really important to think about and I’ll start to unpack them a bit more in future Research posts.
