What do you understand this Studio to be about?

What do you understand this Studio to be about?  What do you hope to get from it?  What skills, perspective and/or understandings would you like to have developed by the end of this semester?

I understand this studio to be primarily about what is referred to as a ‘scene’ in cinematic products, specifically studying the concept of decoupage/coverage/scene construction. However, by the end of this semester I hope to not only have a better understanding of the dynamics of coverage, but through this theory based learning as well as practical exercises, also ultimately emerge a better filmmaker.

I chose this Studio this semester because after completing Film 3 last year, I felt that there was still so much to learn. I knew that I was interested in cinematography and the production side of filmmaking, so it was great to learn the basics of camera, sound and the process of developing and shooting a product through Film 3. However, the more I was learning and researching the more I realised how little I knew. Since The Scene has a similar process and focus on deconstructing cinema, I wanted to further my investigations.

I am especially interested in the aim of this studio for students to be “engaged in practical work, to pursue original research with a view to developing an appreciation of film craft in cinema history and an informed theoretical perspective”. As someone who claims to like film, I have a lack of knowledge about the art of creating it. I wouldn’t know how to describe the measures that the filmmaker took to make something special, nor the production elements considered to realise it.

So – throughout this semester, I hope to be constantly asking new questions and reflecting on new learnings. Through studying others’ examples and discovering the different ways of how a scene is constructed and covered, as well as my own practical experimentation, I hope to develop a sound understanding of all the different technical, economical, cinematic (etc) considerations that go into making a complete scene. Consequently, I hope that this knowledge will be beneficial in helping me be more informed and confident when making my own works.

I declare that in submitting all work for this assessment I have read, understood and agree to the content and expectations of the assessment declaration.
