Mini Research Project Part 7: Documentary vs. Drama

One of the major things I need to consider regarding my investigation of places (and cinematography) is whether I want the different segments to have narratives in them or just have them be moments in time type observations. In this post I’ll try and unpack the possibilities of each option, and hopefully by the end I’ll be able to draw some kind of conclusion and feel less panicked about what I want to create for my final product. Maybe I’ll end up testing both types of films and see where it goes to decide what my final product will be.

POSSIBILITIES FOR DOCUMENTARY

1. Idea from Dan: set the camera in a series of the same shots at three different times of the day, and see if the natural environment reflects the changes during the different time periods without any manipulation from other elements such as editing.

2. Purely documentary shots, but manipulate/emphasise the ambiance of the shots I take using music, editing, framing etc.

POSSIBILITIES FOR DRAMA

1. Have simple planned ‘moments’ of narratives for each scene – e.g. at night, a couple stumbles down the street after a night out, in the morning a businessman drops his keys whilst walking in the middle of a crowd and has to stop to pick it up, disrupting the fast and orderly pace of the street

2. Create three short stories of different things that have happened at one place during the three times of day – different memories associated with this place – this would need to involve actors and scripts
