This week’s lectorial topic was remixes, and I was particularly interested in the area of remix culture with the idea of taking source materials, deconstructing them and reconstructing them to create new meanings.
From the lecture slides, I took note of this quote: “a recombination of content and form that opens the space for remix to become a specific discourse intimately linked with new media culture”. I think that this idea is true in that in the age of social media and constant production of media materials, content is continuously being consumed, interpreted and recreated. An example of this phenomenon is the ‘goat remixes’ – something as simple and ridiculous as changing notes in popular songs to footage of a screaming goat can attract so much attention so quickly online. There is then others bouncing off this original remix to create further remixes, for example the ‘Coldplay turtle’ remix, and so on. As a media student, this increasingly active audience culture, participation and blur between content creators and consumers is a movement that I am happy to see in the media landscape.
