For a person who is notorious for being late like me, usually a walk through the city is rushed and focused at getting to my final destination in the shortest amount of time possible. But after this week’s lectorial exercise on the act of noticing, I’ve learnt that there is a huge amount of detail that gets unnoticed in everyday life. More importantly, there is a surprising amount of media constantly surrounding us that we may not consciously register.
Here are the things I noticed during my 45 minute excursion to QV:
Up high
- Tram notice screen
- Telstra logo on the top of a building
- Artwork of butterflies on the top of a wall at QV
- Children’s Book Festival flag
- Tram stop sign
On the ground
- Cafe lunch menu
- Graffitti on the curb
- Free tram zone notices
- Totem poll with paintings of sunflowers
Mid ground
- Tshirt with The Avengers
- Protest banner
- Tibetan protesters outside the State Library
- Recycle bin signs
- Cirque du Soleil advertisement on the side of a tram
Background
- A busker
- Artwork of a house
- Tram announcements
- Music playing inside stores
Foreground
- A busker
- MIT school jumpers on people
- Vietnamese posters
- Glue store tote bag
- Vietnamese posters
- Bar advertisement
In my hand
- iMessage app
- Facebook (many times)
- An advertisement for a healthy cafe
- Camera app
