Film Form Studio

We started with a sequence from ‘Luck’ starring Dustin Hoffman.

‘hollywood law- cannot write about what you cant see in the screen’ said the lecturer Paul.

Today the class activity was to do tracking shots. So a group of 3rd year students kindly took me into their group and showed me how a studio class works.

We started outside the classroom in the hallway with Trong walking and Michael filming from behind.

A team is formed:)

First couple of tryouts were shot from straight-on and low angles.

We check every time a shot is done.

We take nots of what settings (focus, focal length, exposure, white balance) we are on before we shoot.

We also tried shooting from the front.

Then we used tripod to do a pan shot.

But then there’s a lot of people doing activities at the corner. So we did two shots and it’s done in the hallway.

We also tried shooting inside the classroom. We try to capture the silhouette of Trong and make it look aesthetic haha. He was a good model.

And then we filmed him writing with close-ups of his hands.

And then they went downstairs to film more but I stayed in the classroom to listen Paul (the tutor) explaining the relationships between the focal length and depth of field. So basically the smaller the aperture (the smaller the hole), the less light comes into the camera, creating a big depth of field. And vise versa. The sequence we watched at the beginning of the class, has a great amount of artificial lighting at the back where it’s not shown in the frame.

I also made friends with some 3rd year students which was awesome because as a 1st year student I was always confused and lost haha.
