Reflection on Exercise 15

Our group did the script BARNEY, which was a really intense scene like something from a Mission Impossible film. Here’s the link:

We spent almost 1hr and 30 mins just to get the lighting right. It’s probably the longest time I’ve ever had on designing lighting and as a result, the lighting looked brilliant and perfectly suitable for the script. We had a Dedo with 4 layers of blur gel on the right of the frame, a Dedo with 1 layer of blue gel on the left of the frame, and a kino with 2 layers of orange gel at the back. WE also had a piece of black board to block the windows. It’s a magical moment when we had the kino on to have orange light illustrate the wires and cables under the table. It really adds to the complexity of the shot and balances out the blue on the subject.

When we’re trying to get the blue gel onto the Dedo, we originally went for a C stand and tried to clamp the gels onto it and place it in front of the Dedo. And then Robin showed up and told us we did it all wrong because there’s smaller gels for Dedos in the kit. I learned for the first time that tiny pieces of color gels existed.

I think the group dynamic was really well, everyone tried their best to cooperate. Especially the lighting people, they were tireless with adjusting and came up with lots of creative ideas. Although I didn’t involve with the editing, but i really loved the final edit. The music was perfect for the plot and Matt’s acting was on point. It looks great without any color grading. And it’s the first time that I realized that pre-production was so much harder and more time-consuming that production. We only used about 20 mins to actually film but we spent 4 times longer to decide how we wanted it to look. I generally enjoyed the exercise, I’ve learned so much more than just by studying the lighting in a film. The practical stuff in the course was really the highlights that I feel like every one  would get a lot out of.

Ps. I genuinely feel bad for Matt’s neck and back. He looked like he was in pain the whole time.
