30s sequence

This is the week 1’s 30 second sequence exercise but I did not have the time to put them together into a piece at that time. I tried to make this video a VEVO music video looking video but I now consider it an epic fail. I never knew making a music video was this hard, thanks to the synchronization of the actions and the music that I spent ages working on.

So basically when I was recording, I recorded the video with the audio that was ideal for the whole work and played the audio when I was filming close ups and cutaways so I could sync my actions to it. It is always easier said than done, I had to do ten more takes just to move my lips along the lyrics that I sang and strum the chords along the pattern that I did. It was such a hard job that I almost gave it up while I was filming. But I did not. And I regret about that later when I was editing because it was even harder than filming. It was hard to locate the lyrics and make the separately filmed shots sync perfectly with the audio.

While editing, I played with the order of wide shots, medium shots, medium close-ups and close-ups to see what works best. But I could not decide what order was the best, so I kind of just gave the lyrics that I liked the most to some close-ups of my eyes and guitar because I thought it was the best way to create an intimate feeling just like how I feel about the song.

Next time I make a music video (if I ever attempt to), I’ll do more pre-production work so I would not feel so overwhelmed like I felt this time. I’ll try storyboards and scripts and even just some notes, because some thinking prior to making is always good.
