PB3 – Reflection & Further Improvement

Please read through my two other posts on the process first so you understand the situation fully.

PB3 – Pre-production

PB3 – Post-production

PB3 is finally done and GOD I’ve got so much to say. Let’s start from the beginning. So if you read my post on week 7’s workshop you would know that I did another interview prior this one you’re seeing. And I interviewed Jarrod, who is a stranger that I met on a train. Through our chats I found him funny and interesting and decided to interview him. And it was all good until he stopped replying my texts when I was asking him to sign the personal release form. It did not end well. He just suddenly stopped answering me. That’s such a letdown and I was upset for days. I can’t show you any of the clips that I did because he did not sign the contracts. But I got lots of footages that are more than enough for me to work with. Well, I thought that I could not dwell on the disappointment and started a new plan right away. Austina is a friend of mine from high school, we’re very close and she’s someone I cherish very much. As I was slowly rolling on my Plan B, I was kind of happy that last one did not work out because I found it so much easier and fun to do the interview with someone you know. She’s happy and willing to do it and her mom was also supportive. I forgot to post one on Production and I’ll write in here. During the shooting process, Austina was a bit nervous. She run out of words of couple of times because she lost track of her thoughts. And the reason why I shot it from the front without trying other angles was because she told me that she might get really nervous and not knowing where to look at. So I told her that I’ll be behind the camera and you just look straight into the cam. I just felt like it was necessary to make sure she’s comfortable with what she’s doing and at ease. She slowly got out of the nervousness after a while and she did so great answering the questions. I’m very proud of her because she’s kind of an introvert and a bit shy. She conquered the fear and just decided to speak away. I learned that it was so important to take time with the person that you work with and figure out a solution that works for both of you. A little bit of patience will never do you wrong!!

From my experience with PB3, the worst and greatest thing that I’ve done was the audio (explained in the post-production post). I’m so proud of myself for trying out new things and ending up doing pretty well with it haha. If you know my works you probably know that I have a passion or composing music for my videos. The reasons why I did not do it this time was that the audio does not really satisfy me and putting extra sounds in it might make it worse and in my opinion an interview should be simply and easy to follow without much stuff stealing attention away from the content. I found a couple of problems while I was editing. The time limit is 3 mins and Austina talks about 30- 50 secs on one question, which meant that I had to trim a lot of things down and use the footages selectively. I asked about 8 questions but only 4 made it to the final videos. The one that’s about her sister was completely out of the picture because it was almost 1min. I eventually just thought that it’s good to just focus on Austina, not anyone else. We did the interview in her living room at around 3pm so the natural lighting was stable. I only used Color Correction in Premiere Pro to lighten up the tone a little bit. Apart from that, I applied no filters or other alterations.

PB3 has been the hardest thing that I’ve ever done (I think I said this last time about PB2). I love how challenging it is but not how time-consuming it is. I learned how to communicate better with people so everything goes smoothly. And I learned how to use Audition to reduce noise, which might be very helpful with my further exploration in Media. And most of all I really enjoyed it because this is what I love doing. Even though I make mistakes all the time, but my understanding of video production grows so fast just by learning from them.

And here’s the final video.
