Week 2 Initiative – Thoughts on ‘Split’

I recently watched a film called ‘Split’ that was very impressive. ‘Split’ is a thriller film starring James Mcavoy, who is one of my favorite actors of all time. His performance is ‘X-men’ series and the Scottish film ‘Filth’ was absolutely extraordinary.

In the film ‘Split’, James plays a man who is diagnosed with Dissociative Identities Disorder, meaning that there are many identities living in one body and compete to be the dominant one. I’m not going to give too many spoilers but one thing I’d like to talk about is the performance of James Mcavoy’s.

It is really astonishing to see how swiftly and smoothly he switches from one identity to another. And when all the identities battle for the dominant one, his facial expression changes rapidly and the whole vibe of him changes. I was startled at how he managed to play 32 identities and then still make every identity a well sculpted character. And that’s when I realized how important it is to find a good actor for a role. From my experience with lots of TV shows & films made in China, the performance of some of the actors (mostly young actors) were simply fake and dull. A complicated character like this in ‘Split’ is basically demanding for a good actor to play. A good script and a good director or even the best fimmaking crew in the world still could not help if the acting is bad.
