ASSIGNMENT 4 PT 1
ASSIGNMENT 4 PT 1 – SELF DIRECTED NON FICTION PROJECT (35%)
The Assignment
The self directed non fiction project is comprised of two components.
PART ONE – SELF DIRECTED NON FICTION ARTEFACT (20% of overall grade)
For Assignment 4, students will work in small groups to produce a major work, such as a short documentary (of 5 minutes or less duration), a promotional video, a photo essay, a podcast, an electronic press kit (EPK), a live music video, a transmedia experience or some other approved activity. Whilst the studio content and class exercises up until this point will have focussed on non fiction video production and photojournalism, there is scope within the unit to create a radio/audio or transmedia artefact as part of this unit.
As part of your production, you are required to fill out a safety reporting form. If it is a group project only 1 person fills this out. This form may determine that you will need to go to the next level and do a Safety Report.
Download the form (http://www.mediafactory.org.au/film-tv/pre-production/ (Links to an external site.) > SAFETY REPORTING) and once completed, upload it to the Assignment 3 Google Drive folder (Links to an external site.).
You will not be graded for ASSIGNMENT 4 PT 1 unless you have submitted a safety reporting form.
PART TWO: SELF DIRECTED NON FICTION REFLECTION (15% of overall grade)
Additionally, as part of Assignment 4, students will be expected to individually reflect on their practice as part of their mediafactory blogs. Students are encouraged to contribute to their blog with regular posts – writing all posts at once is frowned upon and writing regularly is strongly encouraged. During semester, you might like to consider some of the following:
- In the first half of semester – consider the course readings/films screened. You might like to analyze or comment on what you have read or seen, consider how it relates to your own practice and/or what it is this piece conveys about the real world.
- In the second half of semester – reflect upon why you are making the creative decisions you are making and consider the relationship between theory and practice.
Five compulsory posts required as part of your mediafactory blog are:
- Two seperate edits of a sequence of your work. Embed two different edits of a key sequence in your media work and write a 350 word reflection on the aims, strengths and weaknesses of each. If you are working in another medium (ie: photo essay, photographs), you might like to explore two different layouts or formats for the work to be presented in.
- A 350 word post on collaboration – Did you have any issues in the making of your work? How did you overcome them? What makes a good collaborator?
- A 350 word post appraising your final work – What was your intention with this work? Did you achieve it? What aspects of the work are you proud of? What media production skills do you need to improve?.
- A 350 word post reflecting on your semester – Review the Week 1 blog post where you outlined your goals for this unit. Did you meet them? What challenges did you experience? How did you overcome them? What did you learn along the way?
- The final work embedded as a blog post – Accompanied by a one paragraph synopsis and a list of student names and production roles. You may need to update or alter your one paragraph synopsis if your work has changed significantly since Week 4’s Pitch and Proposal.
As part of your reflection, do not simply recount HOW your work was made (ie: I shot an interview, cut it, added some music) but rather, WHY you made the decisions you made and WHAT the implications may be for the audience.
