ASSIGNMENT 2
ASSIGNMENT 2 – FOLIO ITEM (30%)
About the Assignment
For Assignment 2, students are encouraged to drastically develop or completely re-do one of the in-class exercises from Week 1B, 2A or 2B for submission and grading.
Please submit only ONE of the following:
(I) A photo essay.
Using 5-6 photographs that you have taken specifically for this assignment, create a photo essay in the style of Eve Arnold’s Film Journal. It could be about anything, but ideally it should contain at least one character – eg: member(s) of a local band, a local artisan/entrepeneur/chef, a family member or friend with an interesting story.
You might like to consider:
- The writing should be 700 words in length (please include word count!).
- Photographs should demonstrate technical proficiency (focus, exposure, framing).
- The pages should be formatted in a layout that engages the reader.
- The completed photo essay should be saved as .PDF and uploaded to the Google Drive submission folder and published as a link in a blog post.
(II) A photographic collection of like–subjects + 250 word reflection.
Take 25-30 photographs of a like-subject, in the style of Martin Parr’s Remote Scottish Postboxes (Links to an external site.). You may use images taken as part of the class exercise, but you must have taken all of the images yourself. Put the photographs in a folder on your Google drive, create a gallery of them on your mediafactory blog and write a 250 word reflection as part of the post.
In terms of the photographs:
- The shots should demonstrate technical proficiency (focus, exposure, framing).
In terms of the reflection:
- Your writing should consider (a) what it is the collection of objects tells us, (b) what signifiers can be found elsewhere in the frame. (c) what, if any, post production has occurred to these images, and (d) the aspects of your image making you could improve upon.
(III) A 1-2 minute observational montage film + 250 word reflection.
Using any of the shots from the in-class filming exercise, create a 1-2 minute observational montage in the style of Frederick Wiseman’s documentary work. Upload the edit to youtube or vimeo and embed the video alongside a 250 word reflection as part of a media factory blog post.
In terms of the video:
- The shots should demonstrate technical proficiency (focus, exposure, framing).
- The editing should have a clear rhythm and purpose.
- The sound should be appropriately mixed and a basic colour grade undertaken.
In terms of the reflection:
- Your writing should consider (a) why you arranged the shots in the sequence that you did, (b) thus, the intention and rhythm of your work, and (c) what you think this edited piece says about the location you have filmed.
