Individual reflection of PB4

I think the most successful part in our submitted essays are the whole essay we did really based on a huge research. All of the topics we are talking about is really academic. While i’m listening and seeing our essays, i think that people can really learn a lot of knowledge from these two essays. The problematic aspects is the conversation in audio essay sometimes make audiences feel a little bit boring, because of the essay is really based on a huge academic resources. While people listening the huge academic conversation, it’s easy to feel boring. And because it is a academic radio style audio, we can’t add a lot of sound effects to cover the conversation except the relax part in the radio.I think it is a problem we try to fix it, like we use a little bit sound effects as i said. However, we don’t know how it works to audiences. Luckily, in the video part, we can use images and video footages to show to audiences. It makes a lot of sense and fun to audiences. This problem will not seen in our video essays.

From my individual contribution, actually in our group we do the research individually. We discussed a lot about our concept. Like we do the concept about “media technology”, we read the reading first to have a normal concept. And then we try to narrow the concept a bit. Finally we choose the “camera phone” for our mean direction. And we separate the concepts and research a bit. And my part is “ Fine Arts & Personal Self Expression in phone camera”.  I search a lot of articles online and i use the way Brain taught us how to search resources in RMIT library. It helps me a lot for research about academic resources.

Like i said before, the audio-based media only can use the sound to make people feel sense. I think the audio-based media is harder than video-based media for me. Because it need more creative ideas to make audiences feel interesting. There is no images to show to the audiences. It is a challenge for people to do it. Like how to use the sound effects, the tone of people talking and how to use the footages. These things are also the things should pay attention to video-based media. However, video-based media more focus on the image and the images is sometimes make people easier to make sense.

While i’m doing the group work, i feel really happy with that. Like George Bernard Shaw said “If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.”  While we are discussing the ideas for our essays. All of us have a lot of ideas, and other members’ ideas is really nice. And we combine our ideas together make a really good work. Because i’m a international student and my first language is not English, and this time I  learn a lot of from my group  members, like how they write the text and the way they communicate. And i never make the videos before i start to learn media one. I also know a lot of knowledges about how to make videos more creative from my group members. I feel very happy with my group work, we learn a lot, we know each other a lot and we do our work pretty good. I think it make me want to have more group work in further, because it learn much more in group than you do the work alone. In the further group work, i will be a person have a lot of communications with my members. It is really helpful in the group, because you can have a lot of creative ideas while in communicating.

Final course reflection

Meida One Final course reflection

What I have learnt :

I benefit a lot from learning and participating in Media one class. Before i studied media, i’m a science students and I even do not make any videos before.  I have no basic ideas about media except my daily media life experiences. From the media one class, i start to familiarize how to use these complex adobe software to make audios and videos . I learnt how to use these professional audio and vedio facilities, such as H2N ZOOM and Sony MC50. As a media student, i also learnt a lot in terms of media concepts and professional words. As an international student, whose first language is not English, I started to learn how to write blog with English every week. From media one class parctice and assessments, i learnt how to collaborate with my group member through the workshops and the PB4. These experiences provided my a great opportunity to learn and be profession.

How I learn:

After attending and participating in Media one class, I started to transfer my way of thinking and how I dealt with daily media footages. Adobe softwares, as our primarily subject application, I thoroughly learnt it from Media one factory and other student’s work. This is the fundamental point of my learning. Based on that, I also paid a lot of atttention on other student’s work to learn the way they produce vedio and audio based media. Collaborating with group members is another way of learning. I learnt the ways my group members would generally used to make media outcomes. Furthermore, I changed my way of adopting daily media footages by watching them to thorougly thinking how to use them and utilize them into my work.

I learnt how to use H2N Zoom and Sony MC500 from workshop practices with my group members. Brian taught us how to use them as well as providing a guidance for us to follow it up. Each gourp member help each other to use these equipments while we are practicing.

I started to adapt to the way of sharing my learning and thoughts through Blog. I gradually make writing on the blog from routine action to a meaningful thing.

l learnt how to cooperate with group members by having a lot of communication with them. I listened their thoughts carefully and response them with my personal understanding and advice. Every group member maintained a harmonious relationship and be thankful that we can work together.

What you found most challenging in the course?

I think the most challening thing is i have no basic media knowledge. I do not know how to use adobe softwares to make media projects. I do not know the concept of media. And i haven’t got a lot of creative ideas to make these audio-based and video-based media. Also, the language is also a very challenging thing for me. English is not my first language, but media is a subject based on a lot of reading or writing things. It is really hard for me like writing beautiful blogs or reading long articles quickly especially the academic articles.

What you discovered about your own creative practice?

I discovered that I started to generate some creative ideas through practice. I start to think how to make the projects more interesting and creative. And while i’m doing my projects, a lot of ideas came out. I never know i can have so many ideas without doing these projects. It’s really appreciable for me to see this from doing these work

Posts demonstrates your engagement with the course and its key ideas and objectives:

  • Project Brief 1_Lofi Media Self-Portrait : This post is the first project brief we did. It did not need any editing but just the original footage. However, it should have present myself without any words. It is the first project i start to think how to make project creative and interested audiences. I think i do pertty well. I try to have some creative things, some worked and some did not. I think it is a good beginning point through this study.
  • Week 2-Lectorial Exercise-“Media is Everywhere”: This post is the exercise we did on lectorial. This exercise provides me a straight way approach to understand substantial media concepts. It let me know the media is not just the thing i thought before. Actucally it is in everywhere. This exercise also let me know the how important media it is !!!
  • Haiku ExerciseProject Brief 2_Media Self-Portrait: These posts are the projects which let me know how to use adobe software and how combine the footages together. Actually, i learned a lot from these practice like i said above.
  • RECORDING SOUND EXERCISESONY MC50 INTERVIEW EXERCISEProject Brief 3: These posts are the projects which let me learn how to use these professional machines. And i also learnt how to cooprate with my group members through exercise. These are real make me feel useful in my media study.
  • Review on Kung Fu PandaReview on The legend of 1900Review on Forrest GumpReview on The Day After TommorrowReview on I Am Legend : These posts are the review of the English movies i’ve seen in this semester. At first, i do not have ideas about write what extra things about media on blog. Then i start to see a English movie every week. It not only help my writing skills and listening skills, but also have a lot of ideas about how to edit the videos or audios to make the videos more interesting.

Image transfer on MDF wood

This time .I’ve done the two same picture but different tone image transfer. It is the first time i do the image transfer, so i wanna to use this way to see which kind of tone is more work in this process. I think these two pics seems good in both tone.

I create the work on the MDF wood with the Matte medium gel. I painted the gel on the paper which images are laser printed and glued them on the MDF wood. After 24 hours, i wiped out the paper.

I think the worked part is the final image on the wood is pretty good, and the pictures are clearly on the wood. All items and colour in the paper shows pretty good on the wood. However, the part which not worked is when i wiping out the paper, i wiped it too hard. And the pictures broken because of that, some parts of pictures are wiped off. I think this part is really hard, and you need to pay attention to do this. Because the paper is too soft. When it is wet, it is easy to broken. If i do this process next time, i will take care of this part, and do it gently. And another part did not work well is because the paper need to be wiped out several times. However, it still will left some white part on the image. I think i need to wipe out it more several times.

I think both of aesthetically and conceptually images will work on this process.Personally,  I love the vintage color tone image ( just like my second work). I think this kind of image work pretty good on the process,

Week 12 Initiative Post – Learning English

According to a report, there are more than 300 million Chinese studying English, more than the total populations of the United States. However, the Chinese should try hard to improve the overall standard of English. Here are the common approaches to improve English learning.

Firtstly, interest and perseverance. English learning is a long and arduous process, and only the interest can make you adhere to learn. For a beginner, at least half-hour for studying is necessary and, the moring and evening is the best time to learn.

Secondly, reading original English articles and listening to English materials which correspond to the English proficiency, which is the best way to learn the authentic English and can help you to think in English way. From Joozone.Com.

Thirdly, brave enough to speak English. The English of many Chinese is “Dumb English” because they can listen, read and write all but speak. Many of them do not speak English on account of face. Mistakes make them embarrassed.

Last but not the least, practice. Practice makes perfect. Adhering to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing to cultivate a good sense of the phrase which makes English learning to achieve a multiplier effect.

To sum up, if one wants to learn English well, he or she should be interested in learning English and be remorseless and brave. I think media course help me a lot not only for media knowledge but also the English very well.

Week 12 – Workshop

In week 12’s workshop (PB4 Group work) :

Failure to produce rough cut of video essay
Consolidated sources and information
Completed script and audio recording for video
Video editing
Supervision & delegation of documents for project dossier

We disscussed a lot of example for our video essay, such as:

Antonio Olmos is a middle-aged photojournalist from Mexico who has been working for almost 30 years. He is one of many photographers who sees this century old industry as under threat of being dismantled by smartphones. With the ease of capturing and uploading images, more traditional cameras may not be needed anymore, thus possibly decreasing the income of many photographers.

Another example, Robert Capa is a world famous war photographer known for his iconic photos taken in the Spanish Civil War and WWII. His camera of choice was a Leica SM 35 mm camera; it’s not a large model, but heavy and complicated. If the film inside was waterlogged or ruined in any way, the whole camera would be disabled. Tinkering with the technical aspects of the camera would more likely place Capa in a dangerous situation; winding the film, adjusting the aperture, shutter speed and ISO manually, then releasing and winding the film again, all requires time in a war zone.
