Fandom

The reading ‘The Night Of a Thousand Wizards’ by Henry Jenkins is really interesting and attracting!!! Although I’m not the ‘fan’ of Harry Potter, the scene he describes is really amazing. This true example explains the concept of ‘fandom’. Harry Potter series is obvious a successful work. It starts from novel which is flat to movie which is 3D and vivid. The fans grow up with Harry Potter, and keep this love to support the series to become better. I think the fan power is very magical. We understand that Harry Potter is just a fictional character, and we don’t live in that magic world. However, when people become fans of one particular thing, they get the power to make that world become true. The story becomes an important part of these fans’ live; the meaning is special to these people.

Generally, I think the moderate fandom is a more positive culture.

For writers or producers, it will be happy to see people like and support their works, and they get the motivation to continue. Also, they will care about these audiences like the lecture said. For fans themselves, they are attracted by this story, and they are likely to spend money on it. In terms of psychological level, the story is kind of believe to these fans. It may keep them accompany, and give them power. In terms of commercial level, fans help to remake more stories into films.

People may think fandom is crazy, and I think we shouldn’t just label ‘fandom’. Fans are just active audiences. They love this story, give feedback to movies, and push the media industry.
