Sound, or music actually, again one of my favourite kind of media, perhaps its because I am a relatively sound sensitive person, I had started listening Beethoven’s music pieces when I was just a baby, or I just paid more attention to it, which cause me chosen Sound Design as one of my 4 ‘precious’ electives in total (which I am still intending to enroll in courses related to Sound, like Music Video or DJ for the coming semester). Luckily, the audio producer Kyla Brettle, a person who works in the sound field, had been this week’s guest lecturer, which discussing the topic that I am looking forward the most in my first semester 🙂

Music

Let’s begin with the ‘music‘, I think that’s the audio element that we award the most, such as the background music in commercial videos or soundtracks in movies. What could ‘music‘ use for in an audio work, like our recent project? As an auxiliary usually, to help the main object being more impressive by using appropriate music with the same mood, but, what else? When you had just heard a batch of informative content, with a short clip of instrumental music following by, which is a bit irrelevant to the previous one, it might just intent to let you having a short break after a huge amount of information, that providing you some space to understand them,  to ‘digest’ them.

Here’s some interesting fact on music in the world of TV drama: In the Amerian TV series, you may rarely find a theme song, a noticeable one that almost playing in every episode, but in contrast, in Asia, such as South Korea and the Greater China region (Including HK, Macau and Taiwan), TV series would usually accompany with a theme song (s), that with lyrics, either being the opening, or the closing of an episode, which the idea might be derived from Japanese Anime. Especially the Korean drama industry, where sometimes there would be quite an amount of soundtracks for a specific drama, hiring several famous singers to increase the rate of their drama being exposed/discussed. For instance, a recent popular one called Goblin, has 14 soundtracks in total, which releasing the full song each online after it had first been played in the drama.

Variety of Sound

From a sound work listened in class, with class discussion (us answering with lecturer’s explanation), realised that actually there’re quite a lot of audio materials surrounding us, which could be classified as Voice or Sound (or should I call it Non-voice):

Voice: Voice in the studio with a little reverberation, Observational voice which just appearing for a little while, Location Interview

Sound: Foley (imitating sounds for specific use), Sound effects (sfx), the Atmos (surrounding), Archival (stored in online/offline libraries)

What ‘Atmos’ Means to Me (I had tried it before and pretty enjoy it)
