A common phenomenon of the first day after the long Easter break, quite a few of our classmates were absent in class, either still travelling somewhere, or just cannot run out from the holiday mood, I guess 😐 That’s why we could have a change to form groups with classmates who we were not familiar with, to work together on this non-edited (I thought it was another single-shot at first, that even cannot stop rolling) filming exercise, with 3 shot types required, The Pursuit.
As an ‘edited in camera’ 1-2 min video, similar as the Single-shot game, we have to be fully planned, by drawing the storyboard in detail (with writing down scripts/description), and practiced several times before actually filmed. One of our creative group mates had come out with the idea of a chicken as the protagonist (These interesting animals again, but I hate chicken…), and, what are they chasing for? A coffee, which means we have to shoot around cafe? A phone or money? We had started to open our wallets, looking for something ‘valuable’ but unimportant to be our only props. The wrinkled $2 Singaporean paper note finally, would be quite valuable for chicken, right?!
As well as, we had chosen to use papers with the Title and the word ‘Fin.’ (which mean end in certain Latin-based languages) as being the opening and closing of the film. Here’s our drafted storyboard with fantastic drawing skill:
When came to the actual filming, we had decided who to be the guy passed by, who own the money, however, as all of us feeling too embarrassed and wired at being a chicken, we had replaced it with an ‘ordinary’ human. Also, for the location, the KFC would be our expected one. However, we didn’t think the restaurant would allow us to film, that we may cause something incidental, even being a workshop exercise, we had moved it to the Swanston Street in convenience.
Overall, as creativity, it was a pretty fun and interesting shooting process, with glad to get knew some classmates, which we might still be working with in the coming weeks, or we might meet each other again at the final project of this semester.
