Before & After

After typing in ‘editing’ on YouTube Search, an eye-catching video had immediately grabbed my attention, an Asian made comedy video that talks about Editing’s Before & After, how powerful editing would be?

The one had been mentioned twice would be stunt actor, it could be useful for the reverse angle shot, to even some scenes in danger. In the world of editing, we hold the ability of using some tricks to accomplish what we want, as actors could always be an unpredictable factor for us, they may change their schedule temporarily, or refuse for some difficult acts. However, I think it’s a technique mostly for film and TVs, that risky scenes rarely have in small films.

The secondary impressed was Visual Effects, by applying different kinds of filter, editors could transform the mood of any ordinary scene into something remarkable, such as silent film and music video that shown in the above video, or adjust a clip’s brightness and contrast to make it more ‘Cinematic’.

Let’s talk about some of my editing experience… To make what I had shot more professional, while shooting by smart phone that hard to adjust expose and tone, I had used to apply adjustment effects on every clip, the compulsory one would be Fast Colour Corrector, as it could modify Hue & Saturation other than just color tone, then Brightness & Contrast, and Warp stabiliser if it’s pretty shaky.

The Slow Motion part would also quite inspire me, that acting like Hong Kong gangster film. I would classify it as a ‘showing off’ editing skill to make videos more interesting and vivid, to emphasise how strong the protagonist is by slowing down movements, or it could be used to show the distinctiveness of the editor as I did in the Self-portrait.
