First Lecture: Deep & Hyper Attention [L]

It was my first thought while entering the classroom, beside it’s very difficult to find seats as I just been there right on time… (Yeah, I got so many hard-working classmates) This class was started from quickly going though the course objective, plan and our assessment, then turn to the way of studying this first Media course, As I had mentioned in the latest post, images would always be more impressive than words:

This image is quite funny right, but sadly, it had told us the truth of what students always did (Including me, of course XD) in an interesting and straightforward way. In the Higher Diploma program, the most significant thing that I had gained was, learn to manage your time in a more efficient way, sad but true.

The first reading of Media 1 course is an extract of ‘Hyper and Deep Attention: The Generational Divide in Cognitive Modes’ authored by N. Katherine Hayles, luckily its just 2 pages long (for a beginner of academic reading in English…), it talks about two totally (?) different ways, paying a Deep or Hyper attention in learning things. The Deep one, means focusing on one activity for a long period, and the Hyper one is to deal with different tasks at the same period, keep switching what we are working on for a  relaxing purpose.

I believe, most of us would have the ability to use both kinds of problem solving way when facing different types of task, for example… Being totally focused when dealing with a relatively important project, like we can’t accept any mistake occurred. And for the hyper attention, we would mainly practicing it when we are having some casual works, like reading books, or some everyday homeworks.

However, I agree that the Hyper would become a more mainstream method toward the younger, as there are too much obstructs of us to be fully concentrated on a specific job, just like our smartphone which extreme import to us…
