Final reflection

First of all, I want to congratulate our film festival for its successful completion. And thank for all the team’s contribution for this film festival. I have to admit that this semester seems to be involved in a wonderful journey in the field of the festival, and I have to say that this experience will be a perfect and inspirational experience during my life. Next, I will divide it into several specific sections to summarize my achievement of different aspect in the process of operating a real film festival.

Preparation

Prior to attending the first MIYFF, I only attended a screening at the opening night of the Shanghai International Film Festival. At that time, I had only a very basic understanding of the film festival – it was a platform for different film shows. For example, the Shanghai International Film Festival, founded in 1993, is hosted by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, and is hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film and Television and the Shanghai Culture, Radio, Film and Television Group. Although I participated in the film festival, I am still a newcomer in the field of the film festival. After I came to Melbourne, I was very surprised to find that I will hold a youth film festival with my new classmates this semester. When I heard about this information, my first reaction was very surprised and excited. But after I learned what it would take to hold a film festival, I started to have some concerns. Fortunately, this concerns is slowly being eliminated and reduced due to everyone’s concerted efforts in the later time.
Teamwork
“It is only after having breathed the festival atmosphere and become one with its rhythms that we can begin to grasp our love for them” (de Valck, 2016, Pg. 9) Only when we have personally experienced how to really organize a film festival can we realize the full charm of it. One fascinating thing about staging MIYFF was establishing workflows and communication between a group of people who barely know each other at all. I think everyone in the class is doing very well. From the beginning, spreadsheets and Google Docs were created to track each person’s roles and responsibilities, and we even set up our own private MIYFF Facebook team to update the progress of each group in the class. Establish clear communication structures is an important thing when we plan to hold a film festival. “Like music festivals, film festivals should realise that, especially in the age of online, it’s the offline communality of film festivals, the fact that we are all getting together to do the same thing, that is part of the source of their joy” (M. Cousins, 2012) It’s really a pleasure to get together to work on a film festival. The more everyone knows about their responsibilities on the team, the fewer errors there are. If something goes wrong, you will be better prepared to respond better. Although no one can know everything, everyone should know who has what information and how to contact them directly when necessary. Seriously speaking, teamwork and division of labor are one of the main contents of my course.

Trailer skills

During the creation of the trailer, we encountered many difficulties, but in the end we all tried our best to solve it. I started to know that a good trailer is not how interesting or complicated you are to shoot, instead you should apply some simple shootings and words to directly catch audience eyes so that attracting them to attend our film festival. The most time and effort I spend in my work is brainstorming. Because at the beginning we wanted our Chinese trailer to be full of mystery. Our first idea was to have a mysterious man throwing a paper plane – a paper plane made with our posters to attract boring people. But in the end, because of the wind direction and other issues, it could not be completed. By talking to other team members and receiving a lot of suggestions, we ended up with another simple and straightforward Chinese trailer. I have to thank our actors here because they just got off the plane and put themselves into our shooting. I want to cheer for our friendship here.

Festival Days

For beginners, MIYFF’s opening night will sell itself as an event, but in my opinion, it is far more than this, it has become a social center and an avid movie fan and people just want to have a good time. The place of common interest of the night. We want our film festival to be more than just a professional platform for young filmmakers to showcase their movies. We also want to let participants feel the exclusive culture that belongs to our film festival. In addition, we hope that they can feel our dedication and expectation for this film festival. First of all, I want to say that the destination choice of the opening night of our film festival is very good. There is a small bar there, which allows the audience to have a place to stay before the movie was played, and allowed our staffs to have the opportunity to Introduce our festival to them before the movie. What I have to mention here is that my cake idea has been admitted by many of my classmates. When I walked into the venue with the cake, some classmates even screamed, and I was very touched for this. The night was comprised of drinks, chatter, nibbles and a very wholesome setting. What’s more, the film we chose was indeed recognized. After the end of the movie, audiences tasted the delicious cake and discussed about our film festival, I was immersed in happiness. I think all of my class would have the same feeling as me.
Next, let us review the second day of the film festival. I have not been able to participate in the activities of the next afternoon for some reasons. But listening to my friend, the atmosphere of the afternoon is not as good as the night yesterday. I think this is not a problem with our film, maybe it is the reason for the venue, because we have limited funds and can only change the venue to the cinema of RMIT. This shows that it is really important to choose a good venue. Another reason may be that the opening night has different meanings, which is why we sold more tickets on the opening night. The RMIT Building 80 are not as spacious as the Backlot studio. Maybe we didn’t take this into consideration when borrowing space, so there was almost no space dedicated to creating a beautiful and enthusiastic Pre-holiday environment.

Conclusion

Most of us hold an event for the first time in two days (not to mention the holiday) – this is something I have never done before. I do believe that studios can get the most out of many of us, far more than any previous studio we participate in. Furthermore, thanks to all the support and cooperation of the MIYFF team, MIYFF has achieved great success and I am proud to say that I am involved. I learned a lot during the film festival.

Improvement and imagination

On the day when the festival ended, I had a feeling that I was not willing to end. It was like a dream, but I never thought that it would end so soon. There is a regret that I want to mention here. Because in the beginning of the schedule, I saw that we are going to make 500 tote bags which typed our name MIYFF. Therefore, I highly recommend it to my friends in China, and many of them have the intention to buy. I think the Tote bag is very practical, and when we put our logo on it, people who carrying it is like a walking “advertisement”. This gives me a sense of pride that MIYFF really gets out of Melbourne and even Australia. But when I wanted to buy it on the day of the film festival, I got to know that because of the limited funding, our team did not make a Tote bag in the end, and I had to admit that I had a slight loss in my mind at that time. I really hope that the Tote bag can be made in the next film festival. I am here to guarantee that I will definitely buy it and use it haha. In addition, there were some minor accidents during our screening, but I thought it was inevitable in the first experience, so we don’t have to take it too seriously.
Finally, I want to thank our teacher, Cerise again. It is her constant encouragement to let us keep going on and to complete our film festival dreams. She are really a very good teacher. When we encounter some difficulties and problems, she will give us some good suggestions in time to help us solve it.

week 11-12

In the past two weeks, our preparations are continuing in an orderly manner. Every time we calm down and reflect, we will be surprised to find that we have only completed so many things in just over twenty people. This really shows how powerful people are.

Because of Rohan’s feedback last time, we decided to take a new Chinese trailer again. On the day of the shooting, because our actor was a classmate in Sydney, her plane landed in Melbourne at four o’clock in the afternoon. This caused our shooting to end until about 11 o’clock in the evening. You can’t even imagine how simplistic our conditions are. Because of the problem of lighting, we can only let our friends take out the lamps at home and give us a light. But fortunately, when we finally finished the new trailer and showed it in the classroom, I was affirmed and I am proud of myself. Through this experience, I found that when everyone has their own specific roles and focuses on their tasks, work becomes easier. I think this course will be a valuable lesson for the future.

When I was in class last week, the teacher also arranged for us to go to building 80 to survey the terrain, and think about how to decorate it on the day of the festival, so as to attract more people to pay attention to our film festival. I now have an idea that is simple and easy to get. I want to make a cake engraved with the name of our film festival and celebrate our film festival. I also mentioned this idea to the teacher in class. My teacher thought it was a good idea and encouraged me to finish it.

At the beginning of this semester, I really thought that holding a film festival was an unreachable dream for me. But this dream is really going to happen now, and my excitement is hard to express clearly in words.

Week 9

Today is a very busy day. First of all, our teams need to introduce our project to studio leaders —-filmmaker Rohan Spong and Erin Rosenberg, the coordinator of the Jewish International Film Festival. After the introduction, the two leaders gave very good and comprehensive opinions. All the experiences have given me the feeling that our film festival is on the right track.

Instagram posts have a nice aesthetic but could use a bit more color. Tessa explained to them what the red, white and black represent in the picture. But Rohan still thought the colors have some monotony and hopes that more colors can be applied to the images. Then we saw the posters, and they thought that there were too many words in the poster. The role of the poster should be simple and concise. The design team is ready to make some changes, enlarge the picture, and leave only the name, time and place of our film festival.

Then we saw the trailer. Chinese Trailer – is committed to attracting more Chinese students to participate in our film festival. We created two videos of young Chinese students talking about the festival and expressing their interest in going. But one of them was because the actor was not completely relaxed and put into the shooting. We should choose to give up this trailer. But on the other hand, Rohan said that it can be applied, it directly and accurately reflects the role of propaganda. English cinematic trailer—-The final outcome was cute, cheesy and had a satirical feel to the “overly-cinematic” style, but unfortunately, the panel was not to keen on the idea and thought it best to pull away from the parody/satirical style, which may alienate our audience. Although there are many places in our work that need to be revised, we have to say that each of us is working hard to prepare for our film festival.

week 10

Last week we held an exciting fundraising event. Overall, this fundraising event was very successful. I am very pleased that we have successfully attracted many audiences. Maybe you can understand this feeling. At that moment, I am a mother. The child I have been bred for a long time is finally born, and very cute and charming. It’s really hard to imagine that a group of people who don’t know about the festival, even some people have never been to the film festival, but everything is going on smoothly.

We made the RMIT Media Portal as warm and cosy as we could, some warm lights surround the handles, and some cushions and blankets are placed on the stools. The sweet and delicious popcorn taste filled the audience. I think this is a wonderful night for everyone here.

It must be mentioned that Ben is definitely a very good leader. Holding a fundraising event is definitely a little difficult thing. But Ben showed his absolute enthusiasm and confidence. He influenced everyone in the media potral and the atmosphere at the scene was getting better and better.

We think this fundraiser event is totally successful, because all the work is properly allocated, everyone also performs their duties. We selected a reasonable theme, contacted the filmmakers and obtained permission from the other party – they were able to show their films and set the scene. But there is still room for improvement. For example, in the aspect of advertising, I learned that the ad group have encountered many failures, but fortunately the final result is still satisfactory.

In the production of trailers, we also encountered some difficulties. Our ten-second trailer was forced to give up because the actors were not invested enough. But we have not given up on us to have a new idea, and have already been shooted, I hope it can be accepted in the next class. This thing told us that we don’t despair and give up at the sight of difficulties, but learn from them and keep on moving.

week 8

After the holiday, everyone returned to the right track and started a new work plan. During this week, we discussed fundraiser and matters related to fundraising activities. With regard to the content of fundraising activities, we have had many different ideas through the discussion out of and in the class. But it is undeniable that the content of the event is mostly around the film. In order to attract more participants, the design team is also working on poster design so that we can sell more tickets. Until now we have sold six tickets. But the advertising team thinks this result is not ideal. Therefore the advertising team have suggested paying for social media advertising — on Facebook — in the hope of attracting wider interest from the local communities. They said that the great thing about Facebook ads is that it really lets you narrow down your target audience to a very specific range of people. Everyone is looking forward to the effectiveness of this advertisement delivery.

The Manager of Venues at RMIT asserted that he would do his best to organise any extra materials we may need including seating and a microphone so that we are prepared. In terms of wider production for the main event, the programming team are currently working on categorizing the films. So far, I think everyone is working on their own work and paying attention to it in an orderly manner.

Finally, we also showed our Chinese trailer to our team members. Ben made some suggestions for our trailer. The first one is that there is too much noise in our background sound. He suggested that we find ways to reduce the noise. The second one is the problem of fonts. He thinks that the color of our existing fonts is not clear enough. I hope that we can change colors of that. After listening to his comments, we made some changes after class. Ready to show up in class next week to get more reviews and suggestions.

week 7

Holding a film festival is a new thing for me, but shooting clips is not. This is why I chose to participate in the trailer group. This week, we started for our mini Chinese Trailer. The reason for making Chinese trailers is to make our advertisements more diversified and attract more people to participate in our film festival.

Before we started working, we thought it was a simple job. Because this trailer is only 10 to 20 seconds long, and the language is the Chinese we are familiar with. But in the course of our work, we have encountered many problems. For example, when shooting a paper airplane segment, it is very helpless for the paper plane not to fall exactly where we need it. After many trials, this problem has not been solved. In the end we can’t help but give up on this idea. After giving up this idea, we discussed it again and developed a new plan. Finally we re-photographed two trailers. One is 10 seconds long and the other is 40 seconds.

The above is my summary of this week’s trailer filming. Through the discussion in class, I learned that we have confirmed that the fundraising event held on the evening of May 9 determined the venue and general concepts. We will have holding the event on campus, in building 14 in a large lecture space——media potral. I think this is a good place to hold our event, because I believe students who live nearby / in the city centre are our target market for this event and we will have better chance of securing numbers if we approach this as our ideal audience. At the same time, choosing film is keeping going on. “Programming for your festival should be purposeful, not random. It is important to nail down topics and themes before you begin looking for films” (Bartosova, Kulhankova & Rausova 2015, p 27). All in all there has been a lot to learn along the way from this particular job role, something which I am proud of when others ask what my responsibilities are in regards to the film festival.

week 6

Our group organized a meeting before the class this week. At the meeting we discussed how to shoot the trailer and determine their script. I was assigned to be a Chinese mini trailer. My idea is that the first scene of this trailer is full of mystery, making it easier for the audience to be caught their eyes and curious to explore our film festival. The image of the mysterious person is applied to my trailer. He flew out of a paper plane. No one knew where the paper plane was going. Until the second scene, the paper plane was picked up by a group of people who were doing nothing. When they opened it, they found out that it turned out to be a poster— obviously, this belongs to Poster for our film festival. After I put forward this idea, the team members are very satisfied and I look forward to the results after the shooting.

In the reading this week, Rambousková suggests being able to present a “clear set of information to present to media” (Rambousková,2015, p.g.97). In this week’s class we determined date of the festival, name, aim and who stands behind the festival. But we still need to decide the location of our festival. This is the most important thing for us to solve now.

What’s more, in class we heard from Mia Falstein-Rush, who discussed putting on her own festival as well as her role in programming at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Her speech is very interesting and she also gave us some suggestions on how to hold a good film festival. We should look to other film festival for example, such as the aspect of submission regulations, partnerships proposals, marketing collateral, website design, recruitment ads and press releases. Secondly, the relationship is also very important. I found Mia’s presentation to be important for our festival.

In Michaela Pnacekovas’ Bright Young Screens: Developing Intercultural Dialogue and Non-Formal Education Through Youth Film Festivals, it states “One has to bear in mind that the whole selection process is not about a programmer’s individual taste – the final result has to satisfy the audiences (and, preferably, guarantee some income!)” ( p8). We did encounter this problem, we received a lot of film production, but many of them did not meet the requirements of our film festival. In order to avoid this, we are prepared to add the submission fee in the next period. But more importantly, we will continue to watch films. In the process of choosing films, we will set aside personal tastes and work hard to find the best film works for our film festival.

week 5

Through the fifth week of study, I learned more about how to hold a film festival. In this week’s class, the budget of the festival was seriously considered. We discussed budgets for many things, such as venues, poster production, and some advertising. In the process of discussion, I found that everyone is very responsible and careful. We are each divided into different groups and we do our own work under the leadership of the group leaders.

I don’t have a lot of experience in organizing work, but I think Tessa in our group is a good leader. She is well assigned to everyone’s task so that no one is wasted. I was assigned a clip and wanted to make some small trailer production tasks. For these tasks I am also thinking about how to perfect it. Because I am an international student, at the same time, we also hope that our film festival can attract more people not only local people. So we decided to make some small Chinese trailers, so more Chinese students can be attracted to and participate in our film festival.

“In order to make the festival successful, you need to let people know about your event and make them want to become part of it. Even though your team has worked hard to put together a rich programmed, you can lose potential audience members if you Try to introduce the festival to the public in all its complexity.” (Rambousková, 2015). We are working hard for the film festival we want.

During the course discussion, I learned that there are already many talented film creators who submitted their original ideas. However, we are also carefully screening their work to select the best ones for our film festival. Finally, I will also summarize my work. I already have two or three ideas about the trailer, which will be discussed in the next week. I have some concerns about one of these ideas, because I use posters in the trailer, I don’t know if the graphic design team can complete the poster design before I shoot.

week 4

In this week’s study, we start to learn about how many people does it take to organise a festival and what do those people do. First of all, production manager is an important role in organising a festival. Production decides the look of the festival and arrange everything about the festival. Also, the technical coordinator or the PR and graphic design people are also needed. Before the actual work, we need plan and prepare a lot of things, such as manpower, materials, and money and so on. As the permission of some special venues, the term of capacity and convenience must be considered. A lot of questions should be asked ourselves before organising the festival. After the classmates’ discussion, the most important thing of organising a festival is budget and resource.

This week, the Melbourne International Youth Film Festival has gone live, and we are now accepting submissions for the 1st official Melbourne International Youth Film Festival! We decided the topic and goal of our film festival. The main objective of this campaign is to educate the people about MIYFF and attract a larger audience to the event, as well as to get young filmmakers to submit their work. Raise awareness, increase attendance, get submissions. In our festival’s plan, because we designed our festival logo by ourselves, so there is no budget on the part of graphic design. On the same time, we can do the trailer by ourselves too. So the budget of this can be saved. We have a operation sheet and it shows that the position of everyone in our team. Furthermore, what things have been done or not can be seen on it as well. I’m learning a lot more than I thought I would. It has been a hugely beneficial process for me. I am looking forward to exploring the next step of our festival.

assignment 1 of The festival experience

What were the key insights about staging film festivals in Australia you took away from Richard Sowada’s guest lecture, and from attending a film festival screening in Melbourne?

There are always some film festivals took place all over the world every year. But I have to admit that I never really understood the film festival and how the film festival works before taking this course. I have never calculated the time, energy and money that needed to hold a film festival. When guest lecturer Richard Sowada described the process he was participate in when getting the Revelation Perth International Film Festival up and running back in 1997, I feel a little surprised and shocked. Spending a lot of money, time and effort on holding
a film festival may not necessarily yield a corresponding return. On the contrary, all the disbursement may be in vain. “Film festival have become an essential part of global film culture. By studying them, we can learn not only about festivals, but about film, film history, industry, and much more” (Valck, 2016, Pg. 9). According to my previous experience in the Shanghai International Film Festival,I can not only see the chinese film but also other countries’ film in it. And I think that this film festival is one of the important and large festival in the world. I am sorry that I did not have the opportunity to attend any Film Festival in melbourne before writing this reflection, but I think the film festivals in different countries always have their similarities. In the film festivals, there will always be some film for audience to watch. In the chinese one, before the movie, there was a grand red carpet ceremony, and the stars that appeared in the red carpet ceremony had a certain popularity. Participating in the red carpet ceremony is a recognition of a star’s achievements and has a certain propaganda effect, this is reason why that so many stars are very willing to take part in the annual red carpet ceremony. In my opinion, one of the most influence of the film festival is that can make audience know more about the film which they do not interested in before. This is where festival culture finds its strength in that “the best thing about film festivals is that they provide the opportunity for audiences to see films that, otherwise, they cannot see” (Peranson, 2008, Pg. 38). Of course, the significance of the festival is not only this, but also the economic effects and cultural communication effects that it brings to the country, the festival of the film itself – it brings together outstanding films and filmmakers, rewarding both excellence and communication. Communicate and promote the development of film ideas and art. Even though staging film festivals something I had never considered, I still imagined that what kind of film festival that I want to make and achieve a plenty of Richards valuable suggestions. Innovation, determination and consistency are key elements in succeeding in any career, holding a film festival must also need these things. In other words, a good film festival must be able to lead the future direction of the film. The film festival is oriented to the past and the present, and it should face the future. The most impressed part for me in the film festival was the part of the historical film review. In this section, there are many movies I have seen since I was a child. If people do not participate in the film festival, they may not watch it again. I believe many people are like me. This not only allows many people to look back on history of some film, but also proves that those movies will not be forgotten. Although holding a film festival is not an easy thing for me, I still want to try my best to do one during the process of this course.

And what were your key takeaways about international film festival culture, present and past, from viewing Film Spa?

After the second week of study, I have a deeper understanding of how to organize a film festival and the meaning of holding a film festival. After watching the film spa, I knew that almost international film festival was started after the second world war. Film Spa recorded the history, change point and growth of KVIFF. I do not know what is KVIFF film festival until I watched the film spa. Through the documentary, I knew that the first KVIFF film festival was organized by some film lovers, and that was a non-competition festival. What it need to be prepared for a film festival is shown in the Miroslav Janek’s 2015 documentary Film Spa. This documentary told us how the KVIFF film festival developed during these years, the reason why this festival could receive such status all around the world and why they spend a lot on inviting celebrities, funs and budding cinephiles to the festival. I think this kind of festival is not only a festival but also a community. In the community, people gathered and enjoyed the film, food and various activities at the same time. “It is growth that typically marks success and grants access to greater resources and fosters increased organisational sustainability” (Valck, Kredell, Loist; 2016; Pg. 2) and growth is something that works hand in hand with innovation. The political influences on film festivals is also shown in the documentary. It was clearly illustrated in the film that, for a long period of time, KVIFF was under strict control of USSR. “Despite the festival operating perforce under the sway of Soviet propagandists for many long years…” (Howard, 2015). Due to this, every part of the festival is limited. For example, USSR used the festival to promote the spread of communist propaganda and make the festival into a celebration for their political achievement. Furthermore, I found that almost every film festival serves another purpose other than simply showing a movie, such as Melbourne Queer Film Festival promotes support for LGBTQ community. Also, as the birthplace of Chinese film, Shanghai itself has a profound film culture. The shanghai international film festival has an important role in exploring the cultural heritage of the city and improving the city’s cultural level. I think it is a very interesting phenomenon to use the film festival to express some topics and opinions. You won’t think too much about your principles when you attend a film festival. Contrary to this, you may be curious about new things and want to know more about them. Finally, I just think film festival can not only make different countries’ culture combined and communicate with each other, but also it can promote some changes in the area of politics.
