Tommy worked in the Altona petrochemical plant before being transferred to the West Gate Bridge as a construction worker. He worked there for nine months before the collapse and returned in 1972 when work resumed, until the completion. This lead to Tommy becoming heavily involved in union work with his first official union position being with the Federated Ironworkers Association. He continued his union work with EDFA which later merged with other unions to form the CFMEU. Tommy had been heavily involved in union reform within Victoria and Australia until Tommy retired from the CFMEU in 2011. He is still an active member of the West Gate bridge memorial committee.
