Reflection:

In the last task two, we went to our partners’ place in order to notice things we have noticed before and new things we never noticed. I realized that I used to notice the macroscopic objects which always attract my attention such as buildings and views without noticing the tiny objects such as numbers, colors and so on. I did this experiment because I am curious about what do other people notice when they throw a quick glance at the photo. I chose Chinatown as my place and took some pictures with a wide angle of view. Then I asked ten of my friends that what do you notice first when you look at my photos. Based on the result,  I found that most of them noticed colors and shapes firstly than other objects. It indicates that people are so responsive and sensitive to visual information especially color and shapes. For myself, I also have noticed that the color is the red objects that can attract my attention this time. So I decided to do the color related theme in this task.

On the one hand, this experiment tells me that during the process of making media, I can choose the tiny objects rather than the macroscopic objects, which is more attractive to the viewers. On the other hand, I realized that we do notice color in our daily life actually because our life is full of color. In fact, we notice that thing but most of us didn’t mark them or remember them. That is the tiny objects are always ignored by me since most of the people intend to notice the large objects, which gives my media an opportunity to use the color to attract people’s attention and raise their interests.

For experiment two, I would like to do a deeper research on which one do people process first, the shape of the color?

Media :

Experiment two:  People are more sensitive to color or shape?

Methods:

step one: I took some photos of road signs and daily necessities

step two: Ask 10 responders to speak out the first word come to their mind

step three: Conclusion

Reflection:

This objective of this experiment is to determine whether people notice shape or color first.

I showed several pictures to the 10 responders and gave them one second to speak out the first word come up to their minds. The results indicate that 7 women noticed the color before the shape of the object. 3 men tested noticed the shape first then color. My conclusion for this experiment is that most subjects notice color before shape, and more women than men noticed color first.

This experiment reminds me of the importance of color, which should be noticed in the process of making media pieces. I may need to pay attention on how to use the colors to attract the audience attention when they watch your media. Through the proper utilization of the colors, the media products can get a good effect. However, the application of the colors should have order and is fit for the aesthetics of most people. The confused use of colors will have the converse effect for the media effect. Through the right application of the colors, the media made can show its good expression to the audience. Therefore, how can we utilize colors suitable when we do media pieces? I will also develop ‘does different colors affect they way people appreciating media products? Can color affect their feeling and emotion?

Experiment three:  Can different tones of colors affect people’s feeling?

Step 1: I took of two different types of the photos which are cold-toned and warm-toned.

Step 2: Ask five responders some questions:

  1. How do you feel when you look at my photos?
  2. Does the color change the way you notice in the photo?

3.   Do you think color can affect your feeling or understanding of the same theme? Please take examples.

Step 3: Compare cold-toned photos with warm-toned photos through their answers then I am able to get the conclusion that does tones of color affects people’s feeling and emotion.

Person 1:

—How do you feel when you compare with my photos?

For the first group of photos, I can see that how the sky and the water combined with one color which is blue. The color of the first picture is cold-toned, include the coconut trees, sky, and water. For the second picture, it makes me feel warmer than the first one although they have the same colors of components. However, the adding of the golden sand makes it different from the first photo.

—Does the color change the way you notice in the photo?

Take the second group of the photo as the example, the wood board kind of distract my attention from the whole set of dessert. Comparing with the second photo, the first thing that I pay attention to is the salmon because the color of the plate is cold-toned so that the warm color in the photo catches my eyes. Unlike the first photo, the warm color in the back ground keeps disturbing my eyes from looking at other objects because there are other warm tuned objects on in the photo, however, theres no enough cold colors in this photos to catch my attention.

—Do you think color can affect your feeling?

The answer is yes. Take the first photo of the first group as the example, 90% of the picture is filled with the cold-toned object, the blue sky and water, the green tree and the white cabin. this photo looks very cool even a little bit cold to me, I would love to look at this photo in the summer so that I’ll feel cool. As the second photo, although most of the ingredient is the same, however, I feel more warmth in this photo, because of the adds of golden sand, this picture looks more like the feeling of summer vacation, I feel very relax and warm.

Person 2:

—How do you feel when you compare with my photos?

I saw three groups of photos and I can clearly know that the photographer wants to compare two different types of color. I felt like positive and energetic through the warm-toned photos. However, cool-toned photos bring me the feeling of sadness and cold. Take the two photos of food as the example, the dessert one is with warm color so that I am desired to taste as well. Instead, the salmon one is with cold-toned color, it makes me feel like the food is not fresh.

—Does the color change the way you notice in the photo?

Yeah, kind of. When I glance at the photos very quickly, the warm-toned makes me associate with comfortable so that I subconsciously believe that things what I saw in the photos are positive and acceptable.

—Do you think color can affect your feeling?

Definitely yes! I have to say that color affects my feelings. For example, red makes me feel enthusiastic and dark blue makes me feel cold.

Person 3:

—How do you feel when you compare with my photos?

1.This soothing picture makes me feel as if I am in some resort

2.It seems as if I am in an island chilling under the trees

3.Hunger strikes me the moment when I look at this picture, it seems really tasty

4.this color of the table is too strong which makes the picture look rather dull to me

5.the phrase ‘life is good’ stand out from the picture and it makes me feel positive

6.the texture of this white wall capture my attention

—Does the color change the way you notice in the photo?

Absolutely, a color change may change people’s perception of any picture completely. The color change alters the focus, temperature and even how it appeals to people. For example, the third picture appeals to me more because it is cold- toned.

—Do you think color can affect your feeling?

Yes, if the pictures are black and white, I will not know what is their main focus because everything is the same

Person 4:

—How do you feel when you compare with my photos?

  1. I really like this photo because the vivid contrast between the sky and the water in the pool creates the feeling that I am on a vacation.
  2. The shades in the picture from the image that I am enjoying my afternoon while lying on the tree barrier.
  3. The distinct contrast between the salmon and the dressings are enticing.
  4. The lay out of the dishes is very neat and tidy, creating a clear option of what should be consumed first.
  5. The tiles on the wall and the text in the square board bring your focus onto the message it wants to convey, ‘LIFE IS GOOD’
  6. It is a unique image with the grayish white tiles as a background, it steers my mind into deep thoughts.

—Does the color change the way you notice in the photo?

Definitely, especially the last picture with only grayish white tile. The dirty gray on the upper two rows of tiles slowly changes to clear white and dirty gray again. It creates the illusion that there is a slow transition on the different depth of gray just in one picture.

—Do you think color can affect your feeling?

I agreed to a large extent. For the first picture, it shows a very clear color contrast between the different elements in the picture, it is a happy setting. However, if it was to be in black and white, it is going to create a different impression on the message it wants to bring across, changing from a delightful mood to more solemn one.

Reflection: After I gather the answers from five responders, most of them believe that their feelings and the way they appreciate the media pieces were absolutely influenced by the two different tones of colors. Actually, colors may just seem simple and unimportant, but they affect our daily lives including media pieces more than we may know. People’s feelings and attention can be easily changed when they looking at the colors. One person mentioned that bright color can grab her more attention than a darker color. Besides, one claims that warm-toned pictures make him feel like positive and enthusiastic. However, cool-toned color brings him the opposite feelings like cold and sadness.
