A feature-length documentary will have so much content. I realized the most difficult aspect of editing a documentary is the number of unscripted responses during interviews.
When I edited the assignment 2, I found myself sitting through hours of content looking for that one little snippet I need. After hours spent preparing to edit, then I work truly begins. It’s crucial to have the footage and assets as organized as possible. I used to create individual timelines for each interview clips. This timeline has all the camera angles and audio sync. Then I start adding cuts in between all of the answers. After that, each splice can represent one answer.
As we all know, every film needs to tell a story. In doing so, we have to make sure it has a beginning, middle, and end. We want to take the audiences on an emotional rollercoaster. Therefore, creating sequences is a must on documentaries. (REAL PAIN). We need to sit and watch every interview pieces. Also, we need to transcribe what the interviewee said and timestamp as we go along. Actually, we used Google Doc to type out every point what is said to note the time in the clip. I thought we took forever on doing this….
