We’ve done a great job on the assignment three. We really enjoy the whole process of making this documentary interview as a group.
We’ve got the basic story of the interviewee and get some great ideas show on the camera in week 7 and our group started filming and editing the documentary interview from week 9. The whole process was kind of smooth but we still faced some problems. For instance, we tried to use two different camera angles when we filmed ( one recording wide while another does close up). We thought it would give us additional options in the editing suite. However, the mistake we took was that we set up the two cameras in opposite directions, then we realized that we just couldn’t combine these two angles together when we edited. Besides, ambient noise is the other problems we met. It’s easy to overlook constant, low noises (the air conditioners) on that day, but the noise stuck out like a sore thumb when we listen back! In addition, I guess our group’s biggest weakness is that we don’t have a solid idea of where we were trying to lead the interview sometimes. ( although we had the prepared questions before the formal interview). We just listened to the interviewee and asked many irrelevant questions so that a lot of time would be wasted. For next time, we should have a clear idea of the overall narrative, structured questions that lead us neatly onto the next part of the documentary. Knowing when to let things veer away from the prepared questions and when to bring things back is a skill that we have to learn.
We spent long hours deliberating the sequences of the interviews. I think it was the real pain that sitting there and listening so many times of abundant interview footage and content. I thought we took forever on doing this.
In short, we are satisfied with our own production and Special thanks to my friendly group mates, our interviewee, and Rohan Spong!
