week 11 lecture

This week, we had Ramon Lobato came in to give us a talk about ‘TV, Streaming and Audience Fragmentation’. I was interested in this topic because this topic is very relevant to us. I would say that I really like to watch television when I was a child but I’d prefer watch Tv shows or movies on my laptop. Netflix occupies a large part in the recent television. In other word, traditional Tv viewing is down.

Netflix, which started out as a DVD postal delivery service in the late ’90s, doesn’t function like a traditional broadcaster. It is a game-changer, a disruptive force that has decisively altered the way we watch television and film. There are no schedules or live shows: subscribers are simply free to download any of Netflix’s thousands of films and series to watch when they want and where they want, whether on a traditional television, a tablet or a mobile phone. I think the way that TV fans now consume television has changed drastically in the last several years. The rise of delayed viewing and streaming services such as Netflix has changed our habits. Now Netflix has tracked how our viewing habits have changed over the years across the world. For years our lives had to fit around television, now it’s the other way around, “We’ve given consumers control and it’s interesting to see the behaviors that emerge when viewers aren’t tied to a schedule. And even more so to see that these routines are replicated by millions the world over.” Said by Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content.

Comedy for breakfast – viewers feel at home starting their day with Fuller House. The Tanners’ may have originally premiered at 8PM, but today, the Fullers’ are devoured before 8AM. While you might not expect popular parodies to stir laughs bright and early, around 6AM members are 34% more likely to watch comedy compared to the rest of the day, with the new comedy wake-up block including the likes of Michael Scott (The Office), Kimmy Schmidt (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Chandler Bing (Friends), to name a few.   ( http://www.thetvaddict.com/2017/05/23/how-netflix-streaming-has-changed-the-way-we-watch-tv/)

The content above is the example to show that Netflix is becoming more personalized. We get to choose what we want to watch at any time of the day. We are not forced to live by the schedule of traditional television. We are able to choose what we want to watch at any time of the day and not forced to live by the schedule of traditional television.
