Media Lecture – 2

This is the secondĀ lecture of Media. ‘Media is …?’ is the main topic of the lecture.

Firstly, we made a quick list about ‘First 5 things that you think of when I say ā€˜mediaā€™ isā€¦?’

From my point of view, my answers are: advertising, social influence; drama factory; music; storytelling.

Some people shared their opinions with us, and it does not have a certain answer for this question. ‘oral; accessibility; growing prevalence; communication; creativity…’ many different answers they mentioned. Thus, I think media is omnipresent, which means media exists everywhere all the time and in different formats, such as music, news, cinema, advertisement, drama etc. People cannot live without media.

Moreover, we discussed about ways of approaching or analysing about media. ‘Mass communications tradition’ and ‘Media Text’ were introduced, however, I did not get that points very well. What I can do is to write them down and search for that, but I still cannot understand the content very well. However, I think teacher may teach us more about theoretical knowledge and explain it more clearly in the next process of study.

Next part was about ‘mediated communication’ and ‘unmediated communication’. Mr. Brian debated about these two sorts of communication models briefly. In pre-modern society, social world predominantly experienced through two ways, which are face-to-face interactions and direct experience. However, in modern society, the predominantly way becomes more convenient. Maps, books, newspapers, photographs could be used by people now because of the advanced technologies.

The last part of the lecture is ‘Lectorial Exercise’. Lana, Kelly, Izzi, Nagini and I are in the group for finding ‘What is Media’ – it is really an interesting topic. We introduced ourselves and I met Nagini and Lana in the other class before, fortunately. So, I made two new friends today! Our main location is on the Bourke Street and what we needed to do was to found all things about ‘media’. I will create a blog post to write reflection later.

According to today’s lecture, I enjoyed it very much, expect the theoretical knowledge that I couldĀ not understand, maybe because of my poor English. ‘Media’ is really omnipresent, we need to use different social platforms everyday and everything we use is about ‘media’. For the companies, media is more necessary because they need to advertise themselves through media platforms, such as advertising. It is one of reasons I want to study this major, because it would be helpful for my parents’ business. In addition, I like the environment of class and model of teaching. Everyone would be creative and active during the class, and we can discuss and find ‘what is media’ by ourselves from our daily life.
