‘EVERYTHING’
In the small-scale work, as I mentioned in the previous post, we mainly responded to two characteristics of online screen making, which are ‘non-linear’ and ‘modularity’. In short, from the point of ‘non-linear’, the clips in the project are selected at random, no limitations for the content, the length and the shooting tools. By responding to the characteristic of modularity, each clip can be seen as the single one, it allows for several pieces of online media to function together efficiently yet separate as well.
In our work, we incorporated multiple media types, including recording on the phone, collect videos at online media platform and use iMovie to editing. In the first assignment, we came up with the idea of ‘tag’ based on ‘Instagram’, which is one of the most popular phone application that allows users to share pictures and videos either publicly, or privately to pre-approved followers. By experiencing the nonfiction projects and fiction projects, we decided not only to focus on static media but to combine dynamic media. For example, the original idea for the work is to look at ‘photos’ that posted online, however, we found it would be more attractive to collect both videos and images. Fortunately, the function of ‘live stream’ on Instagram is an excellent example and it is the main way we collected.
Furthermore, the method we record the ‘live stream’ is using the ‘screen recording’ on phone. This feature is convenient for recording mobile video because it is no need to use more media tools. Once the button is pressed, there will be three seconds for preparing and then the screen will be recorded. Each of us (Nagini, Gigi and I) choose three people who posted live stories on Instagram at random and used this function on the phone to record them.
The finished video is edited by iMovie. We used Airdrop to share the materials and combined nine people’s live stream together. We named the video ‘Everything’ because these fragments are not arranged in order, and the contents are evenly divided and unrelated. It could be everything happened at any time. This video is the reflection of the modularity and the non-linear by using multiple media types.
