Assignment Three – Reflection

For the project, we came up with the idea which was set up five main landscapes to achieve the concept of ‘modularity’, which are garden, bedroom, supermarket, beach and library. Then, we decided to observe six ‘small’ actions in each landscape, three might be the actions that common to see, but the other three are unusual. To making the connections among these landscapes, there are at least one or two actions might overlap to the actions in another landscape. For example, if the action is ‘smell the flowers in the garden’, it can link to the action ‘smell the butter in the supermarket. The videos shot in the landscape may be watched independently of the source but they were shown on the same screen at the same time. This feature follows the principle of modularity, which is to allows for several pieces of online media to function together efficiently yet separate as well. Meanwhile, it is necessary for us to get interaction with the viewers, so to click which action depends on the viewer’s choice. For example, if you click the video of ‘smell flowers in the garden’, the next landscape you will see might be all actions that happened in the garden. However, if you click other actions in the garden, the different landscape will be displayed. This is what we achieved to reflect the concept of ‘variability’. Multiple choices achieve customization of content so that there are different versions for different people. Overall, there are multiple screens playing on the screen at the same time, and the transaction among landscapes based on the viewer’s option that what video they interested in.

Through the process of making the project, what I learnt most was how to use Korsakow. We spent almost two days on how to do the transactions between the images and the landscape. The order of landscapes is the first thing need to think about, we gave each of them a number in order to facilitate the next step, which was about ‘in keywords’ and ‘out keywords’. Clear the logic of ‘in keywords’ and ‘out keywords’ in the landscapes are the most challenge thing for us!! We tried for at least 15 times but still did not get a perfect result!! Clear logical thinking is crucial at this stage and it is the reason why we marked a number for each landscape in the previous stage. For example, the order we set up was ‘bedroom-1; garden-2; library-3; beach-4; supermarket-5’. If the keyword is ‘sleeping’, it might be ‘sleeping 1; sleeping 3’ because the action of ‘sleeping’ happened in those two landscapes. It would be useful to form the logic of ‘in keywords’. To find the similar elements of the images in the landscape would help to do the correct transaction in this process. The connections between the images in the landscape and how to connect to the next landscape were the most challenging work but it improved my logical.

In addition, I learned how to emphasize the subject by changing the shooting angle. When we shot the videos, each of us experienced to use the camera. In the first landscape we shot, which was in the garden, we tried at least two times for each movement. The reason is that the major subject may not be clear and the audience may not be concerned about the subject, so we shot for several times by adjusting the distance on the main subject in the landscape. For example, if the movement is ‘smelling’, just focus on the nose and the subject the person is smelling could emphasise the idea. In the project, we just shot ‘the nose and the butter’, the butter shows the landscape is in the supermarket; ‘the nose and flowers’, the flowers shows the landscape is in the garden. The object can give the audience a hint to create interaction with the audience, allowing the audience to have a capacity for thinking while watching. It turns out that make the subject becomes the majority on the screen is a good method to attract the viewers’ attention.

For the further question, I might have is about the concept of movements. In this project, there are multiple actions and movements in different landscapes, but what about if we just focus on one particular subject in the certain landscape by changing movements? If change the movements on the same subject on the screen, how would they affect the viewers’ attention? Will the changes of colour work on the viewers’ visual on the subject or not? I think the concept of movements and actions are interesting and I am willing to work on it.
