PB 4 Reflection

From my point, Project Brief 4 is quite more difficult than the previous works because it requires a new skill of using the new application, which is Adobe Audition and cooperation is a crucial point during the process of completing the project. I am satisfied with the final cut, there were still some problems in the audio. The first problematic aspect is the limitation of cultures in the early stage. As many people know, Chinese government bans many foreign applications or companies to protect local development, so I really knew nothing about it when they decided to do the research on ‘Netflix’ and STRANGER THINGS. However, Gareth and Brandon showed lots of fresh ideas on the topic. I became so shy and afraid to talk about the ideas because it was the first time that I had no idea about the unfamiliar topic. I searched information online and tried to come up with some ideas that maybe worked. After the feedback from Catherine in the Week 12’s workshop, I started to have some ideas, such as give some personal experience about television, link the topic to Chinese culture or compare ‘Netflix’ and STRANGER THINGS with similar businesses in China. However, unfortunately, it was too late to change the direction of the project. Another problem is the pronunciation. I am not a native speaker, so I cannot speak as fast as Gareth and Brandon and there were many new words that I did not know how to pronounce. Thus, it is required to use Adobe Audition to make the speed of speaking faster. The last issue we may face was the style of presenting. Gareth is good at recording and he had experiences about it, so he recorded easily and knew how to grab the audiences’ attention. Although Brandon is a native speaker, he speaks everything very well and very formal, not like the oral. I could not read the content smoothly and should be more creative and active when I recorded. For the most successful aspect, the cooperate between the background music and the audio is suitable. When the narrator say something important, the rhythm of the background music became stronger and then became soft when the content was unnecessary. Moreover, the connections between each section were perfect, such as the sound of clock and use the material of television shows as the transition. In addition, there were a huge number of examples of movies. The click of these example movies linked our theme together and made the audio more flexible. I think the project we did had a high correlation with the course studies. The requirement of Project Brief 4 is about ‘attention’ and I agree that television is definitely the concept that be a main stream of popular culture for a long period term. The transition of television and the role that television act could be interesting points that we can research. As the lecture in Week 11, television is a great example to link to audience fragmentation. Here are many companies like ‘Netflix’ may affect the traditional role of television, but the common point of these streams is that they all could grab the audiences’ attention and make people fascinated with it, even cannot live without it. During record the project, the only audio-based material we used was Zoom H2n. It was the first time I used that machine to record voice, it could record voices very clearly but the limitation is the speaker need to use it in a quite environment. Thus, booking the studio is required, and we spent 8 hours in the studio for two days. Fortunately, the result of the recording was satisfied. However, the most difficult step was to mix the audio with SFX and music in the way that could keep the balance between the background sounds and audio. When we choose the background sounds, it needs to be clear, low noise, so that it would not crowd the listeners. Thus, the choice of the background sounds is necessary, and need to have some relevant with the content what we talked about. From the point of collaboration, it is important to become a media practitioner. Project Brief 4 is the first group work for the course study of media and the processing of group working taught me a lot. As a group, each person has their own advantages and disadvantages, it is necessary to balance our features and weakness. The communication is important as well because team members need to share their fresh ideas as soon as possible. A perfect product is the cooperate among many people’s ideas. Moreover, for some people who are shy or have difficulty, teammates need to encourage the person and make a sense of belonging. (Thanks Gareth and Brandon taught me a lot, even I knew nothing at the beginning of the project). The last crucial point is making the schedule because it would help the team finish the work on time. If I have another chance, I promise I will do better, I will not shy anymore and be active, not afraid to state my ideas.
