Media Workshop – 9

Today is the first workshop and also the first week for the last period of the whole semester. Thus, the last Project Brief, which is Project Brief 4 is coming…

After submitted each Project Brief, we always have a small ‘film festival’ at the first workshop after the due week. Thus, at the beginning of the workshop, we watched half of the students’ Project Brief 3, because Project Brief 3 is the video with two to three minutes, so if we need to watch all students’ videos, it will cost a long time. Finally, we decided to watch the rest of the videos in the next workshop.

The second part is the most exciting part because we will be divided into groups of three in random! We wrote our own names on the paper and Mr. Brian will pick up three papers with our names and decided each group members. I will work with Bradon Watson and Gareth Harrison together.

As the teacher taught us in the lecture, collaboration is the curcial point in Project Brief 4. To achieve better work, we exchange our Fackbook and create a group in Facebook, so that we can share our ideas at any time. For today’s workshop, we need to finish collaborative contract. Following the steps in collaborative contract, we decided our topic is television. Actually, I still feel confused on this topic, because I did not get clear instruction on Project Brief 4 at first; secondly, I really do not know how to link ‘television’ to ‘attention’. For the first issue, I will solve it on my own in the next few days; for the second issue, I would like to do some research and share my questions with group members. Anyway, we have already decided our topic. Moreover, we also made the decision about the meeting time for the next time. Things went smoothly.

After the brain storm, Mr. Brian taught us how to use the Zoom Handy Recorder H2n and pointed out signal to noise ratio:

  • compares the level of a desired signal (such as music) to the level of background noise
  • the higher the ratio the ‘cleaner’ the sound
  • the closer the sound source (signal) to the music the less ‘noise’
  • sound mixers, recordists and designers go to a great deal of trouble to control ‘reflected noise’

We got 10 mintues to do exercises that practice how to use the Zoom Handy Recorder H2n. One exercise is in the classroom and another one is outside the classroom. I know these materials are prepared for the next workshop, because I will learn a new skill, which is how to use Adobe Audition!
