Week 9

My thoughts about lighting keeps changing every week, the more exercise we do, the more understanding I got, and also the more film clips I see, the more knowledge I know.

My previous understanding about lighting stays in the basic lighting techniques, such as how to position the lights, what kind of lights I should use etc. There are all about the very basic things for beginners.  From the exercise 9, we tested with different diffusers  cover on the lights, and see how would  they  affects the lighting.  By doing this test, we know the thickness of the tracing papers can directly affect the the brightness and texture of the lighting. By knowing this we could use diffusers to adjust the lighting  to achieve the aperture we want to shot on. Moreover, we learned how to use different shapes of black diffuser to block some lighting, creating stying shadows to  achieve some artistic looks.  Also, using some clips on the diffusers can create the swing leaves’ effect.  This exercise opens a new ‘door’ for me to discover and experiment more creative looks .

Robin talks about camera coverage, and also shows us some film clips with amazing camera coverage and lighting. This class also refresh my understanding about camera coverage and the relationship with lighting. There is on film clips we saw in the class, but I don’t remember it’s name, it shows a women walking on the a lobby ?  it is a one take shot,  we could see the lighting and shadow keep changing while she’s walking. I really the camera coverage in this scene, it not only consider the camera coverage in one settled frame,it also consider the lightning change with movement. To be honest, I never think that way if Robin never mentioned, so thanks to Robin.  It makes me thinking, the camera is not always still, and we don’t always need so many differenr angel shots and cuts.  The simple camera movement can makes the the particular sequence looks more integrated. Because I sometimes feel having too many cuts can interrupt my emotion and feeling about the scene.  Considering the lighting the camera coverage could make the scene looks more lively and richer.
