In the mood of love (2000) – Wong Kar Wai

This is the typical scene in the film, when two characters met.

The incandescent lamp on the top of the narrow residential building appeared many times in the film. The use of light makes the subject clearly defined, with a large contrast and a strong texture. The dim light radiates from the top of the character’s head. In a melancholy sad background music, Su Lizhen is shown in a slow motion with a graceful walking stance. In the narrow dark alley, only her back is visible, and the light and darkness conveys the depression and bleakness of the character’ feeling and  make the audience feel sentimental. Su Li-chen met the lead actor Muyun Zhou at the crowded stairs crossing . In this scene, characters come from darkness and go into darkness again. This little unclear soft light is the only way for audience to see their unclear expression and  inner feelings.

In the portrayal of this character, a large amount of sidelights have been used. In the scene where Su Lizhen went to the street to buy meals, he used sidelight to shot from the sides of the characters, raised the screen’s structure and managed to pull Su Lizhen out of the complex background. The light in the middle is relatively weak, and the scene in the middle view enables the audience to more closely observe the movements of the character and the changes in facial expressions. Created a unique sad mood, which naturally reveals the character’s inner feelings and strengthens the conflicting role of the characters in the movie narrative.
