Film Light – Week 2

In week 2 , we had 2 minutes interview practice by using  natural daylight , white board and black board.  It is different from my previous shooting interview practice, because normally we have to set up lights, but now we only use natural lights, so it is quiet a new begin for me to only using  limit lighting sauces to shoot an interview. The classroom is surrounded with white wall, so the light is basically nondirectional, and bounce back everywhere, the good is we dont need more back light, the bad  is the light is  hard to control.  We chose to set up in a conner with only one window on the left side, and another window on the right side future behind. At the first we chose to set up on the right side of the conner and use the daylight from the right side window as our key light. However we found that the light is way too soft, so the white board is not working here, and we cant barely see  Kris ‘s face. Then we changes to set up in the left side of the conner, which has a window on the left. The curtain blocked most of the light, so we rolled it up to let more light in.  This way, we can see some soft light on the left side of her face, but the right side is still in dark . We used white board to bounce some light to right side of her face.   Next, we try to create different look , so we use black board on the right side to block light, and use white board right under her face to bounce some light, and we still keep the aperture. It turns out two totally different results, compare these two videos. I prefer the second one, because it give more shapes to  her face and enhance the her facial structure, so her face looks more slim. And she looks more moody in the second video as well.

I learnt how to use daylight properly as key light, and use white board to be fill light, and use black board to block light to add shadows. It is a good chance to let me think about how the environment can influence lighting, and how to use them in a good way.
