Film Light – Week 1
I was dying for a studio of film light for a very long time, because I found that lighting is the essential part which can directly affects the texture of images. Every time I tend to create a good quality film look, lighting is always the reason made me anxious, because I barely know any lighting techniques, so I had to spend many hours on adjusting lights, and sometimes it did not turn out a good result. I tried to learn some lighting techniques online, but I still believe it would be great if there is a studio that could focusing on film light. I was so happy when I saw ‘FILM LIGHT’ on the Bullet list, and I felt even happier than when I received a gift. I believe thats is called ‘desire for knowledge’. I wish to know more and more professional lighting techniques which could apply on my future film productions. And I’m very interested on how lighting can be used to create an advanced film look, and also how lighting could affect the mood of the film.
On Wednesday’s class , we went through some basic term of film light, such as Key light, Fill light, Back light , Eye light; and terms to describe the direction of light such as side-lit, or front; and we use the terms soft or hard to tell the intensity of light. The terminology is very important here, because we could use it describe lighting precisely to others. We watched some film clips which shows different kind of lighting, and how they apply on the certain scene. The lighting is not only used to light up objects, it can create different meaning and mood. For example, the hard and side lit on on a man’s face can make him looks powerful, on the contrary, using soft light can make him looks weaker. It is very interesting to see the power of lighting, and I’m looking forward to try it myself.
