Week 7 – Reading

 

 

 

The reading is from Film Art : an introduction by Bordwell and Thompson, it listed two types of form in documentary films: categorical form and rhetorical form. The film Gap is an example of categorial form, it is about interviewing lots of women all has a gap between their tooth. The film contains both positive and negative perspective about the gap, but it emerges the definition and opinion about beauty in that era. The filmmaker didn’t directly position his points, but he hinted that people have prejudice of beauty in that era, by  present the women’s experience and stories in an interesting way. Rhetorical film aims at making audience to believe what they have seen in the film. They persuade audience not by proving evidence, but convince they  emotional . There are three types of films used : relating to the source, to the subject, to the viewer. Moreover, it also mentioned about experimental film which is different with mainstream, it has it own style. There are two forms of experimental film: abstract form and association form. Abstract film is organized by theme and variation.’Ballet mecanique shows the pattern and shapes of different object and people in rhythmic mechanical movements. It reminds people of noticing the connection between people and objects.  The association form shows groups of images in non- logical way, and make audience to think more possibilities.
