FEMINIST LENS

Today in class my group and I talked about our upcoming project.

We came together and discussed the different readings that we had done for our annotated bibliography. I researched topics of remix culture, installation art and feminist film theory.

The most interesting thing that I learnt about through my research was what remix culture is, which is the culture that I live in and work in (just with an academic name put onto it) and the lengths to which one can go remixing. Remix culture is the state that we are now in where consumers archive, annotate, appropriate, transform and remix media to produce something new. I do this in my own time when I make collages and scrapbooks from other people’s pictures, where the combination of the multiple texts makes a new meaning and a new text.

We decided that making an installation would be impractical in the time frame that we have, so I suggested that we make a model, or a diorama of the installation that we would have made, which led Amy to the idea of having all of our media texts in and around one solid form, sort of creating a multi-media sculpture. It will no longer be site-specific, but rather specific to a particular theme: how women are represented in texts, drawing from feminist film theory.

I have been very interested in feminist film theory ever since I watched Hitchcock’s Vertigo and read the critiques of it by feminists. I myself am a feminist, and as a feminist that wants to work in the film and television industry, the representation of my sex and gender is very important to me. I think that we will find a well of thought-provoking information on the representation of women in texts and how these representations shape meaning in the text and reflect onto our own lives.

We will be meeting on Wednesday where we will draw up a blueprint of the sculpture as well as coming together on some ideas that we have for the text components.
