So, I have been working on some plans to work towards achieving some goals that I outlines in my Film 3 – Goals blog post.

I mentioned that last semester I was using iMovie to edit my media projects. One extra-curricular media project that I did was to make this promotional video for a band, Cabret Mellow, using clips from one of their live performances. I filmed them at the Lyrebird Lounge in Elsternwick, and I ran across a lot of issues. First of all, their first set is so poorly lit that you can’t even see them in the video, but then the owner showed up and set up more lights for us. So there is a mixture of two different types of lighting in the video which I think is horrible. Secondly, I seemed to lose a lot of picture quality when I exported the video out of iMovie and uploaded it onto Youtube. The band and I decided that it would be a good idea to try recording the video again at the same place.
Goals for this upcoming shoot:
- Better lighting
- Try using a better camera
- Better audio
- Use premiere for the first time
- Get better picture quality
1. I visited the venue last week and the owner has kindly installed more lighting, so this should be fine.
2. For the last video I used a small Sony from the AV department and I am going to aim to use the Sony EX3 for this new video, but it will depend on how much gear I will need to borrow and the logistics of getting it around the place.
3. I am going to borrow a shotgun mic so that it captures the band more that the bar sounds. I am also going to record them on a Zoom H4 as audio backup, in case it sounds much better.
4. I have booked into an edit suite for the day after so that I can use premiere.
5. I am hoping that using a better camera will get better picture quality, but I will have to look it up, as well as researching the rendering process of premiere and how that will affect the videos quality.
I am hoping that this will be a successful shoot and that I can use this promo video for my showreel. Also, as a sidenote, I should make a showreel this semester 😛 I am also thinking about entering the Filmly Festival, but it might be too late to sort out a team before that weekend.
