This is my second version of MILK. It is inspired by David Lynch’s Eraserhead in sound and colour.
For this version, I edited my footage into a sequence that I really liked. Then, I added industrial sounds that I downloaded from freesound.org. I layered them over each other, and I aimed to have the sound crescendo when the film turns to colour, to heighten tension and to make these two shots that are in colour of great significance.
Of course, as a viewer, you can interpret my choice to go from black and white to colour in whatever way, but my intention was to highlight this moment as an important point because the woman is looking at herself, rather than the woman with the dogs. It can be interpreted as a moment of memory, hallucination or apparition. Something stirred inside of the woman, triggered by the woman with the dogs, that brought her out of a mundane moment and transformed it into something strange and magical.
As a note on the colour grade, I watched this video to help me get a black and white grade that I really liked. In my first edit of this version, I used preset Black and White effects, but for my final version I used Calculations (as outlined in the video tutorial).
