This is a rough cut of some of the footage I took over the weekend.
Reflecting on the shoot, there were a few things that went wrong that I am noting to keep in mind next time.
First of all, completely forgot to white balance any shots I took. Ridiculous mistake.
Also, I am unhappy with some of the shots and their lighting. It was a very bright (and very hot) day, and initially I wanted Angelique (in the white t shirt) to be in front of the white house, but I think I will have to change the background. Next door to the white house is a red brick house, and on the other side this weird cement design-y kind of house, so I will try shooting with those as the background for my next shoot. The white of the shirt and the background are just totally blown out because of the lighting. We used reflectors, which didn’t do much at all, and also a light panel, which didn’t do much at all either. The light panel wasn’t bright enough to combat the sun, even though we shot these shots in the shade. So yes, going to reshoot these shots.
I am happy with the shots that I got with the woman and the dogs. I will be grading these in premiere this week. The dogs were really well behaved and a pleasure to work with, and their handler was really nice and awesome with them too.
I haven’t yet listened to the sound I got on the zoom recorder. I got sync sound from the cameras, but it was very windy so you can’t hear much anyway. I think I am also going to use creative commons sounds in this project, so I will be listening to and downloading some stuff to make soundscapes.
I don’t think I needed three people to help me crew, I was thinking I would need 4 but I think a crew of 2 or 3 (including me) would be sufficient for the upcoming shoots (where I will just be getting pickups, or maybe a nighttime shot).
I was thinking of other ways that I could make this really strange and surreal, and I could really do anything, because the project is just one person looking at another, and seeing the different emotional reactions to the subject being looked at. I might experiment with shooting completely different things and editing them in. I’m thinking of using a giant puppet dressed as a woman in a fur coat, in the same location, would that be too weird? only one way to find out.
