BAND DEMO

At the beginning of the semester, my firstĀ initiative post was about reshooting a live demo video for my boyfriend’s band. On my first shoot with them, I shot it on a Sony MC50 with no lighting equipment in a pub that did not have a lot of lighting. The result came out very grainy and I was unhappy with the quality.

These were the goals for my next shoot with the band, as outlines in my first post:

Goals for this upcoming shoot:

  1. Better lighting
  2. Try using a better camera
  3. Better audio
  4. Use premiere for the first time
  5. Get better picture quality

I have ticked off all the boxes in my latest shoot with them. This is the firs demo I did with them:

And compare this with my latest test video. This is with the gain pushed up high.

And this is still on the Sony EX3, with no gain:

I like it a lot better without the gain, because with the gain turned up, their faces get washed out in all that coloured light. The coloured light actually confuses/annoys me because I didn’t know whether I should do a white balance, because the light is always changing, so I didn’t. And some colours are much brighter than others, like the red, or they seem like they are when they are mixed with the other lights in the pub and the red curtain. I don’t know… It’s a puzzle! I’m waiting to see what the band thinks and how I should edit it for them, but otherwise it’s definitely an improvement on the first one.

This demo has also been really helpful for my final project because I borrowed an EX3 for the first time, so I know how heavy it is and how annoying it is to commute with. So I will need crew to help with gear, or to use a car. Also, this has generally been a good experiment to see what it is like to shoot in dark, indoor locations without lighting (very hard haha). I want to shoot one of the scenes for my final project at night, outside, so I may be faced with similar issues of underexposure.
