This is my friend, Nic. Since my first week at RMIT, when I first heard that we would have to do a portrait of someone we knew, I knew I was going to do this portrait on Nic. Nic to me is an enigma. Nic to me is elusive and strange. Nic to me is incredibly creative and driven to be so. So I want to do this portrait of him.
When I first told Nic about my plans to do a portrait of him, my friends and I had found him in the middle of the night playing basketball with some kids in the courts behind Government housing in Fitzroy. Many of my friends have anecdotes of spotting Nic in unexpected places, doing something unexpected, wearing something unexpected. One of my first ideas was interviewing some of his friends about him and these anecdotes, which will probably give me a vast amount of footage. I want to use only the audio of these images and maybe re-enact some of these anecdotes with Nic.
Nic had some great ideas for the project as well. He had a lot of visual images that had been stewing in his mind that he wanted to create. Nic is going to be a great collaborator as well as a subject.
I will be doing a lot of pre-production over the Easter break:
1. I will read short stories and poems that Nic has sent to me for possible use as narration
2. I will contact friends about interviews and ask for them to think of 2 anecdotes each
3. I will brainstorm with Nic about visual scenes that we want to create.
4. I will look online at archives for found footage that visually match anecdotes/Nic’s writing
Lots to do!
