I guess my name would be a good a place to start as any! The name’s Tori. I’m a second year student at RMIT University in Melbourne, studying the Bachelor of Professional Communication, with the intention of majoring in PR and/or media production.
I’m aspiring to be something; what that may be, I’m not entirely sure of yet. But what I do know is that my enthusiasm for the media industry is insurmountable, and that I have an avid interest in international politics, law, and social justice.
RMIT’s “Bachelor of Professional Communication” is a (rather polygamist) marriage between media production, journalism, and public relations, which I’ll endeavour to complete in 2014.
I graduated from an inner-city school in Melbourne in 2010 with the desire to pursue an Arts degree at the University of Melbourne. There, I studied for a year before deciding that Arts wasn’t for me (as much as I enjoyed the diverse curriculum), and that my future lay elsewhere.
I’ve recently concluded the first year of my Professional Communication degree, which has been an enjoyable (and dare I say, superior) alternative to the Melbourne Model, and am looking for my next challenge.
Whilst at RMIT, I’ve studied:
- Writing Media Texts (second year, first semester, Brian Morris)
- Editing Media Texts (second year, first semester, Liam Ward)
- Communication Debates and Approaches (second year, first semester, Dr. Danielle Kirby)
- Economies Communicated (second year, first semester, Cathy Greenfield)
- General News Reporting (first year, second semester, Diana Thorp)
- Strategic PR Planning (first year, second semester, Jenny Robinson)
- Politics Communicated (first year, second semester, Phillip Dearman)
- Communication Histories & Technologies (first year, second semester, Dr. Danielle Kirby)
- Professional Writing (first year, first semester, Lucinda Strahan)
- Introduction to Public Relations (first year, first semester, Phillipa Brear)
- Politics, Economies, Businesses (first year, first semester, Cathy Greenfield)
- Communication and Social Relations (first year, first semester, Terry Johal)
As well as a diverse range of subjects at the University of Melbourne:
- Globalisation
- Culture, Media & Everyday Life
- Spanish (dual-semester)
- Homer to Hollywood
- Criminology
- Marketing
In second semester, I’ll be continuing my contextual major studies in politics with International Human Rights & Law, in addition to the core subjects: Networked Media, Broadcast Media, and Journalism Ethics and Regulations.
