Animatrix, Transmedia and Mr. Jenkins

Expanding further on this concept on Transmedia, we were asked to do a reading by Henry Jenkins – The Transmedia Guru. It was a length reading explaining the Transmedia concepts mainly through the movies such as Matrix. It also uses different examples such as Lord Of The Rings and Star Wars. The readings puts light on the making on the film and how the directors went ahead and how this concept of Transmedia falls into it. It was length but it was interesting. It broaden my understanding on Transmedia even better. Examples always works better. Knowing a concept and understanding it via an example are two completely different things.

In class we saw a few movies from The Animatrix. I had seen the Matrix long ago when it had come out and I also vividly remember playing the video game and hating it. The Second Renaissance Part 1 and 2 along with The Detective Story and were a delight to watch.

I always thought matrix as a sci-fi movie, but never realised that there was so much thinking behind it. Also the cult following it has developed is just crazy. I learnt that these films were a completely different made by different directors and animators based on the works of Wachowski bothers. Its a work of art by different Japanese animators expanding the Universe of the Matrix. It is always a delight to watch sequels and prequels of movies that you love, while reminiscing the old, you get to know a little more about the same universe – What The Animatrix does is that it opens different doors to the same Universe.

Now one can watch The Animatix first and then watch the movie, it does not matter as it always helps add some knowledge about the Universe via the stories told in these films.

So far my understanding on Transmedia is that this concept (to put it in lame man’s words) helps you build a story universe.
