The reading by Cal Newport called ‘Clarity of the Craftsman was a liberating one. It talks about two approaches people take when starting out – The Craftsman’s mindset and The Passion Mindset. He tends to argue that Craftsman’s mindset is the one people should opt rather than the Passion Mindset as passion would follow. He gives examples of Jordan Tice, a guitar player and Steve Martin who have taken this approach ‘be so good that they cant ignore you’. He differentiates the two mindset as Craftsman – What you can offer the world and Passion – What the world offers you.
Personal Reflections
This article is one of the best so far. For a long time I have been a person who would fit in the passion mindset. I would always think, what would this job offer me, what would this course offer me. It is only off late that I have adopted the Craftsman mindset, even though I did not know about it. The main aim as it says in the article – Be so good that they cant ignore you. And that one can only achieve with the Craftsman mindset. I would like to add that Passion Mindset would make you arrogant as you would consider yourself the best (though it is good at times) but lets say technically and historically its been proven that practice triumphs talent.
